Shivery Yells

When I was a kid, we used to sing Pumpkin Carols at Halloween, basically Christmas carols with different words.  This one was my favorite, sung to the tune "Silver Bells".

We're on the sidewalks
We're on the porches
Dressed in costumes to scare
Through the city, we're ringing the doorbells.

Trick or treating
candy eating
gooey stuff in our hair
but the most fun is shrieking out loud.

Shivery yells,

That's the Halloween nitty gritty
Moan and groan

Halloween's just one night a year.

• As far as I know, we don’t know Parker’s first name but the story really required one. I gave her a flowery girl’s name, something I thought didn’t suit her, to explain why she goes by Parker. I picked Cassandra because Parker says things people don’t want to hear and Gabrielle because in “The Miracle Job” the little girl thinks she’s an angel.
