Amelia by Carol Miller (National Poetry Month)

Carol was a friend who, unfortunately, died much too young. As my last entry for National Poetry Month, I present one of her poems: Ameila.

Amelia by Carol Miller

                                                                                                                 In memory of Betty Schneider

It wasn't all
that long ago
you left the atmosphere:
I'm standing where
I stood with you -
I stand alone down here.
I pace the beach,
watching the sky -
you left with -
out a word,
didn't wave goodbye.
Flight was freedom,
sky was heart -
you traveled by
instinct, not
someone else's chart.
Those who knew you
best
are the ones who
miss you most;
we don't boast of
knowing you -
we are grateful
for being blessed,
when the skies
are threatening
& I'm
not feeling strong -
I know that
                                    Amelia's
here:                            Amelia's
been here all along.
When I wonder
what has happened
to the one
who loved me
most -
I know Amelia
sits out the storm
somewhere off
                                    the
coast.
Amelia, if you've
found peace
I have found
                                    peace
too -
Amelia, if you
hear me,
this is for,
this
            is
                        for
                                    you...

I just cried - coming up on some anniversary dates of my own - people who died much too young. This is so beautiful.
