My computer sucks!!!

Kerkevick sent me this link to brighten up my day, which does need brightening (although this did help). I now know why I avoided getting home Internet for so long: my computer sucks! It crashed (again) and I can barely get Internet at home, which means I'm back at the library. This happened when I had dial-up Internet but I figured it was the computer and the dial-up (because I needed an external modem), but no. It's the computer. Time for a new one.

Have you tried to reinstall windows (get the computer back to factory settings)?

I did that with my niece's laptop and it was (almost) as good as new. It was certainly faster and didn't freeze any more.

If you need any help with it let me know :)

Or maybe, as a first step, install the program called C Cleaner and let it clean up your computer.

I think it's fairly integral to the computer. It completely died some years back and was brought back to it's factory settings by the young man at the shop. He seemed very competent. Plus the computer is fine as long as I don't access Internet with it. I think Toshiba just f'ed up.

I will take a look at C Cleaner but given the problems with the Internet I'm not sure I'll be able to download it onto this machine.

C Cleaner did help. I can at least see web pages again although I did have to refresh LJ three times before I got any of my entries. I still think a new computer is in the works.

Did you do both a Clean up and a register clean up (the first and second choices on the list to the right?)

Cleaning the registry is often what is needed when a computer seems to slow down. Don't be afraid of doing this. You simply save when the program asks you if you'd like to save and then there should be no risk in deleting all the problematic registry keys.

Also try looking under the "tools" button. Here you click the 4th option (mine is in Danish but it probably says something like "system reboot" or something like it) Here you highlight all the options you can. The program will lock the first one on the list for safety reasons. Then you delete all the others.

If it's been a few years since the computer was last put back to it's factory settings it might be time to do it again. But try out the other options in CCleaner first. I've saved quite a few computers using nothing but that program :)

Well, devo79's suggestion has helped. I can get online at home again. It's working better than I expect it to beause I'm still not feeling very trusting given how bad it was yesterday. Still, it's nice to be online again.

I hadn't noticed the different options on the side. The clean-up itself made a big difference. I've just done the others; hopefully they'll help as well.

Especially deleting the "system reboot" files, since they take up a lot of space.

Using Ccleaner once a week or so should keep your computer up and running.

If/when you get a new computer you should certainly install Ccleaner and use it often as well. It's all the crap that accumulates on the computer that slows it down and not really the hardware.

That's very soothing actually. Pretty words with a lot of weight.

Computers suck because they suck you into a world of tech, then throw way more tech at you than your current model can handle then they make you rob a bank to upgrade and then they throw way more tech at you than ... well you know. It seems these days its already obsolete by the time it hits the shelves.

I hate my computer. I can't live without it. Hope you get a good one. :D

My computer is still giving me Internet problems so, yeah, hating it lately. I'm so frustrated I've actually been shouting at it. *sigh*

I'm thinking of going with a Dell because I had a desktop which worked find, you know until it totally crashed but it was good for years before that happened.

I had a SH Dell laptop for years and my current laptop is a Dell. It's about 4 years and still going strong though it needs a new battery and maybe a bit more ram.

And suddenly I'm having no trouble with Internet at home. I've already ordered the Dell, which is just as well. I'm thinking of trying telecommuting and the Internet connection on this laptop is just too fragile to make that work.

I'm still feeling stressed, which is why I'm going with the Evil Binky icon. ;-)

Lol. I hear you. I hate having to play computer detective - fixing or buying.

Telecommuting is great - long as you're a bit disciplined. You do miss the people contact sometimes.

Evil Binky is just so durn cute. :D

I don't think I'll have trouble with the discipline. And I always felt like an outsider at my jobs. It might actually be easier not to see other people leaving me out of their cliques.

I adore Evil Binky. He's from a web comic called ubersoft.

I've always been happy to work by myself but I've also learnt to like working with others.

I know what you mean about cliques. I really like working from home. You actually get more done in less time. Save heaps in travel costs too.

The only bother is friends who think you no longer are working or something and expect you to volunteer to do stuff because they can't because they are at work! Lol.

Hope the new Dell does the job for you. :D

And travel time, which is even more important at least to me.
