Hmm, it's my impression that Buffy's mentioning the Harvest tells Giles what to research. But of course they always come through with the research in the nick of time so, yeah, maybe that wouldn't have made a difference.

but having Master on the loose (with a bit different version of Darla as his right hand) would be much more fun than the canon S1. *grin*
