QOTD

One of the books I'm currently reading is volume 3 of I'm in Love with the Villainess, a Japanese light novel by Inori. As I was reading this morning, I was struck by this quote from one of the characters:

They say the elderly tend to look back fondly on the past; I think it's because we envy our younger selves, who had yet to make the mistake we've made now. It's easier to wish to change your past than to acknowledge what you've done.

While I wouldn't classify myself as elderly, I can certainly relate to this idea — when I look back, I find myself not thinking that the past itself was inherently better, but instead that had I done something different — if I could have magically had then the knowledge I have now — that I might perhaps have been able to end up in a better place now.

New Book...

Brigadoon meets Buffy

When I wrote the first of the series, a couple friends said, you can’t ignore the vampires. So I put them in because yeah, they were a thing in Eastern Europe.(Maria Theresia sent investigators, even, in the mid-1700s...) But I don't read horror, and I'm indifferent to vamps unless they are characters, not monsters, so I tried to play around with the uncanny valley/alien idea.

In THE PRINCESS AND THE SLAYMATE, Ruli, a new vampire, is trying to adjust to this change in…can you call it a life? She’s lost everything. But that including her old reputation for weakness and lack of direction, as she discovers the lure of badassery.

At the same time, Kim and the crown prince of Dobrenica are on their honeymoon at last, but just as she and Alec are relishing the magic of Venice, they find themselves cornered and nearly grabbed by goons. Whose? More important, why? They have to figure out the roadmap to royal marriage while on the run.

Kim reaches out to Ruli for answers, and so begins a wild adventure as ancient enemies redefine what it means to be human. And inhuman.

Monday night.

It turns out something that I thought conflicted with plans this week is happening next week. I'm almost disappointed: it would've been nice to have an outstanding commitment preventing me from having to make a decision. It's eminently possible something might come up and take care of things for me that way. I'm hoping it does. If not, I won't be able to complain - I'll have the day free for it, so I might as well spend it on the event with an invitation.

Today would've been spent being more productive, but then I saw the job listing required a link to a short video explaining why I should get hired. Stopped me cold. I figure with something like that, I might as well just call them in the morning, because I'm probably about as likely to get a job cold-calling a place as I am linking to a video. Not sending it in; uploading it somewhere.

Bonsai trees

Like many 1980s kids, I was introduced to bonsai trees through The Karate Kid. In the years since, I've intermittently entertained the idea of trying to train a bonsai tree — and maybe someday I'll get around to it. In the meantime, though, I enjoyed reading this article from NPR celebrating the 400th birthday of the Yamaki Pine, a bonsai tree which survived the atomic blast at Hiroshima and then was gifted to the United States by the government of Japan in 1976. I was particularly interested to discover that one of the bonsai experts/enthusiasts featured in the article was from New Orleans, and that one of his trees which was photographed for the article was a bald cypress, which is a type of tree that I'd never seen as a bonsai before.

Looking out my window at Venus and the crescent moon

The Wikipedia article on the motif of the star and crescent gave a lot more information than I'd expected, but I still don't know why it's so associated with Islam in the present day.

Speaking of symbols made literal, here is a snake saved from eating its own tail. I don't know anything about snakes, but this does look like a vet's office, so if the vet thinks that hand sanitizer is the way to go then it's probably the way to go. (Also, I strongly suspect most of the people in the comments talking about how hand sanitizer to make a snake not eat itself is animal abuse or that the fact that the snake did this is a clear sign of animal abuse don't actually know any more about snakes than I do. If they're right, it's not because they really know.)

Creative cranking.

It's terrifically frustrating to realize one of the reasons I'm presently struggling with a new piece of writing is I don't have anyone to talk to about it. The person I talked to through my last big project hasn't been online in a while - which, honestly, is the right call given her real life responsibilities - and I haven't been able to find someone else to help me out through conversation. In part I don't know who to ask about it. In part I don't know how to ask about it.

Some of me feels like I should be able to manage this without the back and forth, that it was just that one project and the rest should be able to keep going as I've done before. Some of me feels like I'm spoiled in several senses of the term to want that kind of thing again. There's questions about time, too: time zones and free time. Free space in people's heads. As though it's too much to ask people for. Especially in regards to the people I know, because I know them, and it's hard to ask someone to start doing that kind of thing for you. At least, I've found it difficult. Writing to an individual, the Stephen King "ideal reader", is a good way to get the juices flowing, and right now, I'm feeling readerless. It's making it difficult to parse out certain choices, because I can't talk them over with anyone. I'm looking at the wall because rubber duck debugging isn't working right now.

Maybe I just need a couple nights' good sleep. I hope that's all it takes.

So, my library eloan of Long Live Evil came through

A note to anybody who wants to read this: I get the impression that we're supposed to think that the "original" book was written with prose so purple it might as well have been in grape-scented marker. The effect can be a little much, but hey, at least nobody gazes outward with a glint in their silvery orbs, limpid, lambent, or otherwise! But yeah, if you aren't able to get into it within a chapter or two, that's not going to improve itself.

I liked it, but to be fair, I like most things I read.

Oh, one more warning - somebody at Goodreads was going on about the fact that the author either misunderstood or willfully misused the term "Ladies in Waiting" for this book. I don't quite agree that it's something to get so annoyed about, but we've all got our thing. I don't like books which have potatoes in pre-Columbian Europe (or not!Europe). You'll all be pleased to note that I observed no potatoes in this book.

So, realistic contemporary fiction is written and set more or less in the present

But time moves on. What, exactly, do you call "realistic contemporary fiction" once it's no longer contemporary? It's not exactly historical fiction either, since writers of historical fiction generally make specific choices in bringing the past to life, ideally with few or no whoppers of mistakes.

I sometimes say "then-contemporary", but... well, it sounds a bit silly, doesn't it?

(On a related note, it looks like now people are less likely to say "issues book" and more likely to say "social issues book", is that accurate? I'm not loving a change that involves using more words to get to the same meaning, but okay.)
