Spinning Poi

From Home of Poi, 'Poi' is the Maori word for 'ball' on a cord. Poi is a form of juggling where the balls are swung around the body.

I spun poi for the first time this evening.  I learned to spin them forwards and backwards, and I can also walk and turn as I spin them.  The Butterfly is when you spin them in opposite directions in front of you; I can do that as well although I'm not really good at it.  I also can do this thing where I'm spinning it before me, about shoulder level, and I flip my wrist and the poi are spinning behind me; I'm really bad at that though and can only do it one hand at a time.

Oh, and I hit myself lots and lots of time with the poi!  It was a blast.

Someday I will be good enough to spin flaming poi.  ;-)

When I was a teen, Mom left fragile knicknacks out on a coudh sidetable. I kept knocking them over. Smash! To the ground they went. I thought I was clumsy for decades until I found out that teens can be klutzy just because they're going through growing spurts.

I was sort of pissed at Mom after that, for making me think I was a klutz all those years.

Then this really isn't for you. I'll be working towards spinning fire! *squee*

I have some friends who do it, and it's beautiful. I've even stood and had the fire spun around me. *grins like a madwoman*
