Angel, Season 5

I've been lent a copy of Season 5 of Angel and am enjoying it more than I expected. One thing I'm not sure of though. If Angel and Spike had gotten to that Guardian guy, the one at the hole in the world, earlier, would they have been able to save Fred?

Wesley was upset with Gunn for not sharing info, and I can see Wes' point, but I'm not sure it would have made any difference by then.

Sad as it is, but they would have never been able to save Fred's life. She was infected and nothing would have helped.
The essence of the demon was eating her up until there wasn't anything of Fred left.
It was like Illyria said later: Fred's soul was shred into pieces when Illyria was re-born in Fred's body.
But deep in Illyria there are still some of these pieces left and so she is able to immitate Fred when her parents arrived in L.A.
And finally but only in the moment of Wesley's dead Illyria understands the meaning of true love.

That's what I thought too, but when Wesley stabbed Gunn, he (Wesley) said it was if Gunn hadn't hidden information they would have been able to save Fred. At least that's what I heard.

There also might have been an "if you'd gotten here sooner" moment with the Guardian, but I'm not sure. I'll have to go back and watch it again.

I am pretty sure if they'd brought the sarcophagus to the Guardian then they could have done whatever spell he had and saved her without killing anyone because the spell killed anyone between the sarcophagus and the Deeper Well. Of course by the time they knew that it was way too late.
