Fic: When Dreams Fall

Title: When Dreams Fall
Fandom: BtVS
Rating: Teen
Characters: Rupert Giles
Concrit: Please, in comments
Summary: How Rupert feels when he first learns he's expected to become a Watcher.
Disclaimer: They aren't mine, not yet, but they will be ... once I've taken over the world. Bwah-ha-ha!
Note: Written for the prompt of autumn at Giles Shorts.

Rupert was ten the year he was told about the Council, the Watchers, and the Slayer. He was told that if he was very diligent he might be assigned a Slayer one day. The words were supposed to be encouraging. All he'd planned to do and all he'd planned to be was gone, just like that.

Rupert left the house and wandered, eventually finding himself near the woods. The leaves, once red and gold on the trees, had turned into a dull brown after they'd fallen to the ground. Soon they'd decompose and fade into nothingness, just like his dreams.

Poor Giles - trapped in a life not of his choosing.

Yeah but even if you do choose your life, it doesn't always turn out to be what you'd expected.

Oh wow. That's some serious feelings right there.

I can't imagine being that bereft, just having any hopes of my life wiped clean away, totally beyond my control. And poor Rupert, he's so young!

This completely makes sense, too. I can understand how this hurt makes him rebel. I present to you, ladies and gentlemen, the birth of Ripper!

This is wonderful. You write so well. You say so much with so few words, it's stunning, really.

Thank you, that would be a heavy burden to bear, especially for someone so young.

I've written a lot of drabbles over the past couple of years so I've had a lot of practice at getting them right. ;-)
