a star, a tree

a star by Gabriel Rosenstock
a star
a tree
and the longing in between

Tree by Jane Hirschfield
It is foolish
to let a young redwood
grow next to a house.

Even in this
one lifetime,
you will have to choose.

That great calm being,
this clutter of soup pots and books—

Already the first branch-tips brush at the window.
Softly, calmly, immensity taps at your life.

I really, really like the first one (both poems are great, actually) :)

The line this clutter of soup pots and books— is a lot of fun :) !

There's a lot of longing in star gazing, I think, at least for me. I'd imagine that one would probably either feel a kinship to trees, or the word 'reaching' was tumbling around in one's mind, to connect the two. There's also the mythic quality to the sky and the earth as lovers, though the common gender assumptions in that match are likely reversed in the case of the poem.
