As far as I can tell, they dared because I hooked them up to the Internet. Apparently my laptop + Internet access = one dead laptop. *sigh*

I actually had the Toshiba fixed at a computer repair shop. It was working fine but I, stupidly, put it online again. The Dell should be under warranty. Now that the madness of the move is behind us, I'll be talking to them.
