American doing the British meme

Because why not, also known as I have a job application I should be working on so I'm doing this instead.

Apparently a bunch of rabble rousing Brits didn't like our American-centric meme ('Muricah, Rah!) so cmcmck created one which is extremely British; I lifted it from gillo.

1. Marmite- love or hate?
Um, right off the bat you've lost me. *grin* I've heard of marmite in fanfic, but that's as far as it goes.
2. Marmalade- thick cut or thin cut?
Shark Hat explained to me that thin vs thick cut refers to how thick the marmalade's orange peel is cut. Since I've only ever seen it look grated, I'm going with thin cut.
3. Porridge- made with milk or water?
We call it oatmeal here. Soy milk.
4. Do you like salt, sugar or honey on your porridge?
1/2 of a banana; 1 tablespoon walnuts. Oh, and do you know in Cabin Pressure when Arthur sings "Have a banana." Sometimes, when making breakfast, I sing that same snippet but I change "have" to "half" as in "Half a banana."
5. Loose tea or teabags?
Teabags. Whole Foods has a chai that I like.
6. Where on your door is your letterbox?
About half-way down the parking lot with a set of others.
7. What's your favourite curry?
I've tried a couple of recipes in 660 Curries. They weren't as hot as I expected but there is a chicken one, with coconut milk and curry, that I think I can rework until I like it. But Chana Masala, if that counts as a curry.
8. What age is the place where you live?
Built in the 70s.
9. Where do the folks running your local corner shop come from?
Local corner shop? Why would people not go to the closest stores to them?
10. Instant or fresh coffee?
Fresh.
11. How far are you from the sea?
I had to look this up on MapQuest but 60 or 70 miles.
12. Have you travelled via Eurostar?
Nope.
13. If you were going to travel abroad, where's the nearest country to you?
Canada.
14. If you're female (or possible even some males) do you carry a handbag?
A purse? I was going to say no but I like to think and write as I'm walking so I do carry a bag then, with paper and pens.
15. Do you have a garden? What do you like growing?
No.
16. Full cream, semi skimmed or skimmed?
I put soy milk in my tea if that's what you're asking. I'm trying coconut milk, but I think I like the texture and flavor of soy better.
17. Which London terminal would you travel into if going to the capital?
Last time I wasn in London, which is the only time I was in Lodon, I flew Virgin. The B&B we stayed at was near Paddington station.
18. Is there a local greasy spoon where you live?
Not particularly greasy, no.
19. Do you keep Euros in the house?
No, but I probably have some British currency left over from that trip.
20. Does your home town have a Latin, Gaelic or Welsh alternative name?
No, it's named after the man who designed it.
21. Do you have a well known local artist or author?
Guy Gavriel Kay lives up in Maryland I believe. I think Elizabeth Peters, who wrote the Amelia Peabody stories, lived nearby; my friend met her. And a guy in my writing group has a wikipedia stub for his novel, The Unreals. I'm not sure how he got that up there.
22. Do you have a favourite Corrie character?
Apparently this refers to a soap opera.
23. Are your kitchen sink taps separate or a mixer?
Mixer.
24. Do you have a favourite brand of blended tea?
No.
25. What's in your attic if you have one?
It's empty because it's a hole in the ceiling that I'd need a ladder for.
26. If you go out for a cream tea, what jam do you like on your scone?
Hold onto your hats. I've never had a scone.
27. Talking of scones- scon or scown? Jam or cream first?
Scown.
28. Barth or bath?
Bath.
29. Carstle or castle?
Castle. I didn't know it could be pronounced carstle.
30. What flavour of crisps do you favour?
Hold onto your hats again ...
31. If you go to the chippie, what do you like with your chips?
Chippie? Place to buy chips? As in potatoe chips?
32. Take away, take out or carry out?
Take out, mostly.
33. If you have one, what colour is your wheelie bin?
Oh, garbage can. Brown.
34. What colour skips does your local skip hire use?
No idea what a skip is
35. Do you celebrate Guy Fawkes?
Nope.
36. Dettol or TCP?
Huh?
37. Do you have a bidet in the bathroom?
No.
38. Do you prefer courgettes or aubergines?
These are icky vegetables, right?
39. In the 'real world', do you have friends of other nationalities? Which nationalities?
Not so much.
40. Do you have a holy book of any sort in the house?
Pagans don't really have holy books per se.
41. Do you prefer a hankie or tissues?
Tissues.
42. Are you a fan of crumpets? What do you like on them?
And we're back to hold onto your hats
43. Doorbell, knocker or both?
Both
44. Do you own a car? What sort?
Yes; Saturn.
45. What sort of pants do you guys prefer? Y fronts or boxers?
Not a guy. And you do know that pants means slacks, right? ;-)

Okay, and somebody worte a Giles/Jenny story where he pulls off his pants (slacks) to make the point that pants are underwear. Anyone have the link?

46. Anyone still a fan of suspenders?
Yes, I have a pair. But I'd never worn them until recently.
47. Do you have a favourite quote from the bard?
“Full fathom five thy father lies; Of his bones are coral made; Those are pearls that were his eyes: Nothing of him that doth fade But doth suffer a sea-change Into something rich and strange.” Most likely because I'd love to be rich and strange.
48. Do you like toasted muffins?
More into toasted bread.
49. Do you think a traditional trifle should contain jelly?
Trifle. I thought I knew what that is, but I don't.
50. Do you attend regular religious worship? Of what kind?
Nope. Athiest here.

It really was fun to do the meme when I wasn't always quite sure what they are asking. ;-)

I think I need to do a photo-post to explain a few things. Do you guys have jars of yeast extract? That's basically what Marmite is.

[identity profile] dragonyphoenix.livejournal.com 2015-08-12 07:33 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeast extract? I don't actually know. As far as I can recall, it's not something I've ever used.

Nice to see a British version of the infamous American household meme! I've tried my hand at it too. I think I understood about as much of it as I did of the American one. Marmite, courgette and aubergine have no secrets for me but like you, I have no idea what a "skip" is and I'm not so sure about the crumpets either.

[identity profile] dragonyphoenix.livejournal.com 2015-08-13 12:44 am (UTC)(link)
A skip is a big dumpster. Gillo put a pic on her page.

And crumpets were explained as like pancakes but they have holes which the honey can sink into. I'm not sure how you get holes like that into pancakes, but there it is. ;-)

Ah, one of THOSE things! We have them too but I had no idea what they're called in English.

About the crumpets, I've Googled them in the meantime for pictures. In my country we have something that's a bit similar (small thick pancakes made with yeast) and they get holes in them too, though not nearly as big. Maybe it's the yeast?

[identity profile] dragonyphoenix.livejournal.com 2015-08-13 06:07 pm (UTC)(link)
We call them dumpsters here.

OOoh, good idea. Crumpets do look a bit odd to my eyes. I looked up a recipe and it says they use extra yeast.

We call them dumpsters here.

At least that's a clear name! Though when hearing the word dumpster I would normally think of something a lot smaller.

I've done this meme, thanks to you! Didn't want to be the first American to do it. :)

Have you tried almond milk? I've had a really good almond latte. Coconut milk in coffee tasted weird to me. :)

[identity profile] dragonyphoenix.livejournal.com 2015-08-13 12:36 am (UTC)(link)
Almond milk is too watery. Soy milk has a richer texture which is why I use it. Yeah, I tried the coconut but it doesn't taste right.

This was quite entertaining.
P.S. Scones are delicious. Pumpkin, vanilla almond, and raspberry are favorites of mine.

It was fun to do. I'm not sure I've ever had a scone. They look like they'd be yummy though.
