League of Eclectic Authors

One of my writing groups had it's holiday party / white elephant book exchange today. When one of the women took "The Biggest Loser" weight loss book, Clint - WHO IS AS CHUBBY AS ANYONE - commented that the only WOMAN who didn't need it got the book. As you can imagine, we got on his case for that one.

I brought June Casagrande's It was the best of sentences; it was the worst of sentences, which is a great grammar book. She knows exactly where my knowledge fades off. I got an Audobon book of Eastern birds. I'd initially picked Aubodon's insects and spiders bug traded for the bird book because I think Dad would like it.

What a jerk! But then again, I have known more than one guy who weighed 300 pounds and decried "all those fat bitches." There are serious double standards in society right now.

It may have been more lack of thinking than deliberate jerk-ness.

But that's nothing compared to our first book exchange. One of the guys got a Margaret Atwood book and I think it sort of freaked him out. He asked if anyone would take it and then opened to her picture and started making fun of her hair. Because, of course, skill and technical expertise (not to mention actually selling books!) is nothing compared to how pretty a woman looks. Ever since I have brought a book by a woman to every one of these exchanges.

Man. What a jerk.

June Casagrande's book sounds pretty great though.

My roommie asked what I wanted for Christmas so I think she's getting me a copy. Yay! I've been using the library's but I like the book enough that I'd like my own.
