Exterminate!

I'm watching Dr. Who: the 7th series. It's not terrible. I actually liked the trip to Narnia. I even enjoyed the Dalek episode even if I don't know when they started having human minions. But they've pretty much always been an enigma. When we first met them, they'd lived in a toxic wasteland for so long they couldn't survive anywhere that wasn't radioactive, and now look at them, wandering all about the universe, not at all concerned about the non-radioactiveness of it all.

It took me a long time to get into Doctor Who in part because internal and version inconsistencies do niggle at me. Then I realized that the uncertainty and the differences from episode to episode, like the dreadful special effects, were part of the experience.

Absolutely. You don't have to like it; it's okay that some of the other things bug you, and that some of the things that bug you are outweighed by other things for me. I agree with your description of those two "this is too close to now of an issue" items. I just enjoyed other episodes enough that I took it in stride. Frex, the Empty Child two-parter, in the same season you mentioned. For me, there are specific things that get a cringe reaction, but a lot more that get a shrug. But it is on the least science-y side of science fantasy, and there is not a lot of extrapolation going on at all.

I enjoy wandering conversations, don't worry. I agree with you that there are some episodes that are good and some that are ...not good. I also like (and am terrified of) the Weeping Angels. I actually haven't watched all of Series 7 yet, but I'm not worried about spoilers because anachronism (and fandom and semi-official alternate canons) have also become part of the experience for me. Have you come across a *good* episode or part in Series 7 so far that you would really recommend?

Snowpocalypse sounds fun.

I honestly just want a River Song series. NOT written by Moffat. I am okay with no Doctor for most of it. Because I find her way more compelling than most of the Doctor iterations, or even most of the companions (except for Martha Jones, who is amazing, and Amelia Pond, though really she just needs to find a life away from the doctor like way earlier because he does fuck with people).

Someone on Captain Awkward said a thing about if they had a TARDIS they would go through time rescuing women who were about to get in a relationship with terrible assholes. "Don't date that abuser, come with meeee! See the universe!" I want to write this fic eventually, with the added thing that River Song "borrowed" the TARDIS to do so.

ALSO I don't know if you watch Jane the Virgin (you should if you do not! It's great! Though I am behind because Netflix is behind :( but anyway). The actor who plays the main character just got the best haircut and omg I ship her with Petra SO MUCH for good reason which...is probably never actually going to be canon but let me have my headcanon okay.

River Song is way too good for the Doctor, too, tbh. So she is like the best person to rescue people from relationships! Because...well, the backstory, you can see how she had a Weird Religious Upbringing due to Being Kidnapped. (The Amelia Pond storyline is totally worth it.)

I watch Jane the Virgin in chunks kind of? But also when I have brain fog silliness is exactly what I need.

Amazing shit like this, for example:

Photoshop Jane's dad did of him with "Jane as a baby" except he used adult Jane's head in the photoshop so now it's just weird

whoops that image did not resize sorry.

but since we're doing images etc can I just confess that also the actor who plays Amelia Pond is kiiiiind of amazing. Also the one who plays Martha Jones. Also River Song. I maaaay have kind of a Thing for certain companions/people.

I also have a fic idea where the Doctor has a companion who is a lesbian and her girlfriend thinks she's having an affair but actually she just Went To See The Universe with this Alien. So when they meet the girlfriend is all "I don't know about you, dude" and the Doctor is trying to remember what it's like to be around women who are totally 100% Not Attracted to Him. And then maybe one of them accidentally introduces the Doctor to a gay friend who is TOTALLY INTO THE DOCTOR. And maybe the Doctor realizes that it is not human women he's into, but *men* and then is like "wait I was trying to follow some prime directive thing with humans and relationships and waaat" and his companions are like "Dude are you homophobic?" and he's like "No but I didn't realize I was a little bit species-ist?"

I miiiight have put a lot of thought into this plotbunny.

Also have you seen the older Dr Who series? I tried to watch it but I noped out during the first episode because of the Extremely Problematic Racism and I haven't dared try it again. Like, not that New Who doesn't have racism issues/sexism/etc. BUT I did not get as shouty.

SO, the first episode I saw from old Who was The Aztecs and I'm not going to detail the racism/colonial/white savior syndrome, just let this screenshot speak for itself:

Barbara in high priest regalia on a temple in front of a possible human sacrifice

along with this bit from the description on Wikipedia:

With the TARDIS trapped in a tomb, Barbara is mistaken for a female reincarnation of the ancient high priest Yetaxa, and assumes her guise and identity. From her new position of power, Barbara sees her chance to bring an end to human sacrifice. She sees the good side of Aztec culture manifested in Autloc, the High Priest of Knowledge, and the gruesome side embodied in 'the local butcher', the High Priest of Sacrifice, Tlotoxl. As something of an expert on this period, she sees how advanced their culture really is and believes that if sacrifice were abolished, they would be spared destruction at the hands of the Spanish. The Doctor's urgent warnings that Barbara cannot change history fall on deaf ears, much to his fury.

(That and the white people playing alleged Aztecs had just terrible accents. Like, I get that it had a limited budget and also 1960s, but omg it was painful to watch.)
