dragonyphoenix: Blackadder looking at scraps of paper, saying "It could use a beta" (Katchoo)

together for the first time!

Leslie and I have been watching Star Trek ToS and it’s taken quite a while to shake down to what we now consider the base crew. I don’t believe we saw Chekhov at all before season 2 and it’s only at the third to last episode where we see both Chekhov and Sulu both in the same episode. Up until now they’ve reminded me of Superman and Clark Kent: never seen together. Finally we have proof, at the episode about the computer taking over the ship, that they are two separate people!

Now I'm reminded of this (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XSo4sxQGqT4) old Patton Oswald bit on studying physics as an English major...

So for the final exam, I’ve never figured this out, but for the final exam I guess he decided, ‘Um, I’ll try to reach out to these wood nymphs and not be so mean’ so he wrote, he gave us, for the final, five words problems on the board and he really prosed them up and sprinkled some English lit dust on them or something, to make them user-friendly and one of the questions was ‘Captain Kirk is sitting on the bridge of the USS Enterprise. He tells Chekov to fire the phasers. If the phasers leave the phaser bank going this fast and the Romulan ship is coming this fast -” basically a distance and velocity problem in space.

So here’s how my friend tells it, because he and I are sitting in the very back of this auditorium, he says ‘Um, suddenly, in the middle of the exam, you just stood up, walked all the way down to the front of the auditorium to the professor’s desk and now you’re right next to him and you’re saying something very specific and very angry and no one can hear what you’re saying to him and then you walked away and the professor’s head just dropped and he stood up and he said ‘Uh, I’ve just been informed that SULU fires the phasers on the USS Enterprise… if this made the question IMPOSSIBLE TO SOLVE I will uh, change the name of the crew member.’

Oh that is priceless. Thank you so much for sharing!

Yep. Chekhov doesn't appear until Season 2.

Though now, I feel like Sulu as Superman (or SuperNavigator) is something that needs to happen.

Go, go, write like the wind!

I still feel very new to Star Trek. I'm not sure I'm qualified for that.

Chekov was added in season two - the faux reason was that someone in-the Soviet Union complained there were no Russians on the Enterprise. The real reason was that Roddenberry wanted to cash in on the cuteness of the day - baby face boys with long hair (yes, the wig days were horrific). I met him one - Koenig - and I also met Takei. Back in the early days conventions were put on by fans, and the dealer room was off somewhere - not the center of attention. I was on an elevator and George Takei got on - talk about a million megawatt smile! I met Koenig and Mark Lenard after the show. They were doing a play in Flagstaff.

Wow, that's so cool that you got to meet them!

If I could turn back time I might even have talked to them.

Actually I met Nichelle Nichols too - she was judging what would be a cosplay costume contest in today's parlance.

I didn't talk to her either...
