Stopping by from snowflake_challenge to say hi. And to agree that this is one of the best Uhura lines of all time (and this episode is a hoot). I didn't know Nichelle Nichols had ad-libbed it -- that's great to know. She's one of my favorite Star Trek characters.

I hadn't known she'd ad-libbed it either. My roommie and I recently watched all of the original series. I loved this line when I saw it! ;-)

I did see an interview with Nichelle Nichols where she said she had a whole backstory for Uhura. Best of her class, of course, because those were the only candidates who'd get picked for the Enterprise. But also that she has someone special back home waiting for her. The song she sings, Beyond Antares, where she sings "where my heart is" was meant to suggest that her heart isn't on the ship, that her love is waiting for her. ;-)
