I used to think Ethan wasn't quite so evil but I've recently changed my mind. What threw me is that he doesn't want to be there to see the killing. What I didn't get was it wasn't that he minded if there was death and destruction, he just didn't want to see it first hand.
And yeah, Ripper definitely couldn't be around Ethan after that. Although I could have put a good thrashing in there without Ripper breaking character. I rather like it like this though.
