In your own space, rec at least three fanworks that you didn’t create. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

This past year, inspired by Nirvana in Fire which I just adore, I went looking for similar works. I found The Untamed and dove deeply into the fandom. I'm just going to go through share the ones that I know I adore just from the title. And so I give you the stories that have me jumping up and down in glee as I scroll past their titles / descriptions.

Aria's video, a love that won't sit still just captures Lan Wangji's panic as he falls for Wei Wuxian. Excellent look at the character.

Meng Yao vs. the Board of the Homeowner's Association. The title of the series put me off for a long time and I think I first read one of the stories without realizing it was part of this series. Thank God I read it. It's delightfully funny. Modern AU. The head of the homeowner's association made Lan Xichen tear up his vegetable garden and Meng Yao is out for revenge. He's super catty and snarky and it's just ... I know I used the word delightful earlier but it fits. There are also historical stories so we get to see Meng Yao meet Lan Xichen in high-school and their first kiss. And we meet the Lan boy's mother. She's so cool. I literally spent to day wishing i were her. Also, Wei Wuxian accidentally cock-blocked Meng Yao's first time with Lan Xichen and Meng Yao's revenge is to help Wei Wuxian and Lan Wangji adopt a child because then they won't have sex for decades. Loved that.

KILF (Knits I'd Like to Fuck In): Lan Wangji learning to knit so he can make warm clothes for his boyfriend. Awww. Except it also is an incredible look at gender identity. Boyfriend also likes the idea of being a girlfriend.

our footsteps sing a reckless serenade: Arranged marriage. Jiang Cheng / Nie Huaisang slow burn. And the city is an actual character with strong opinions on how things should be.

Between Earth and Sky a Gilded Lotus Blooms. I want to call it a Meng Yao redemption arc but in this he's a courtesan rather than a cultivator and never takes a wrong turn into evil. And he's courted by both Lan Xicen and Nie Mingjue. I really love this one.

And I apparently have a thing for Meng Yao fix-it fics because Becoming the Phoenix is my next rec. Meng Yao stays at the cultivation classes and joins the Lan Sect. Love the moment when he realizes "Lan Xichen's been courting me?" Eeee, makes me so happy! And I adore the political intrigue.

Mulberry: Fascinating look at Jiang Cheng and how he rebuilds his Sect. More fascinating political stuff. Also, him learning embroider is so sweet. Has not been updating frequently but so worth reading.

before the sun falls
. So basically a student of culitvation history shared knowledge that wasn't supposed to be shared. This led to the book, tv series, etc. This story is how it really went down with story but also historical reference material. I'm describing it badly but the story is excellent.

I haven't gotten as heavily into Nirvana in Fire fanfic but ...
The Bodhisattva of Jinling: Mei Changsu is given a dragon's egg as he's dying and keeps reliving his final year. I love the movie Groundhog Day. Combine that with NiF and give Lin Shu a happy ending? I'm totally there. A real delight of a story.

OK, and Leverage. Audience: 822,000 and Homeland Security. Hardison's surprised by impressed by how well his Dragon Age mods blog has taken off but his viewers are really there to figure out what the blonde woman and angry guy are up to. OK I didn't describe it well, but it's hilarious.

Challenge #9: In your own space, promote at least one canon that you adore (old, new, forever fandom). Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

I'm not sure if these are supposed to have fandoms are not. I first learned of the Mermaid Love Songs story from a fanfic. AO3 has fanworks of Carmilla. And Mr. Spider, from The Magnus Archives, has his own Tumblr page. Technically, The Deep could be considered a fanwork of the music of an experimental rap group.

Not too long ago, I noticed I had three books on mermaids in my reading queue. So I decided to make it a thing. First up is Mira Grant's Into the Drowning Deep. This falls into the ancient monster from the dawn of time chases scientists through the Smithsonian genre except the monster is mermaids and the Smithsonian is a luxury cruise ship set up for scientific research. Mira Grant nails the genre which is no surprise if you've read any of her other works. The science seems right (for someone whose closest encounter is computer science), the characters spot on, and the monsters scarily plausible. It's definitely an excellent read.

In Rivers Solomon's The Deep there is no scientific rationalization for the existence of mermaids because they are not a scientific people. in fact, most rely on instincts over memories. Only one, the narrator, carries the burden of the memories of her people and it is overwhelming her. This is her story, of how she gives the memories back and flees, perhaps to find a better way for all of them. Mermaids as the descendants of pregnant women thrown off slave ships makes for a really interesting origin story, and the themes of generosity and denial work well with the plot.

In The Mermaid's Daughter by Ann Claycomb, Kathleen, a promising young opera singer, is plagued by inexplicable maladies - stabbing pain in her feet and the feeling her tongue is being ripped out. She follows a strange calling, voices heard in the sea, back to her mother's homeland. Will she find an explanation and cure or is this the same madness that has struck her motherline down generation after generation? It's been over a year since I've read this book but I loved it so much that I asked Dad to get me a copy of my own for Christmas.

A Ladies' Guide to Collecting Mermaid Love Songs
by Aimee Pichee: I'm not sure how to describe this one. Once again there's science but in this case it allows the narrator to distance herself from desire. It's a fantastic story. I highly recommend you check it out.

Mayticks draws incredibly sensuous images of lesbian mermaids. At this point I'd like to mention that all the stories recced above have lesbian characters. I didn't realize that until just this moment. I thought most, but not all, of them did. Back to mayticks' art, yeah, it's incredible. Check it out.

Aaand that all for mermaids. How about a bit of horror with comedic undertones?

Rusty Quill presents The Magnus Archives. This podcast starts out as recordings of supernatural events by an archivist at the Magnus Institute. But of course supernatural entities aren't just going to sit there to be read about. They start coming into the Institute and following people home and taking them over. And then the real twists start.

The vlog of Laura Hollis, a student investigating odd goings on at Silas University, shows her falling for her new roommate - the old one having disappeared under mysterious circumstances - and learning that Carmilla has led other girls to their deaths. It's more comedy than horror and quite fun.

dragonyphoenix: Francine from Strangers in Paradise (Francine bliss)

Happy Fanfic Writers Appreciation Day!

To celebrate I’ll share some of my fave fanfics. I thought I’d share 5 (as in 5 times something or other and 1 time not) but I could not keep my list that small.

1. The first is a double rec in that it’s the same idea continued and the idea is a doozy! The Yelp Page for Aziraphale’s Bookstore. Just let that sink in for a moment. It’s even better than that. Part 1. Part 2.

2. An Ever Fixed Mark. Short version: Pride and Prejudice with soul marks. But it’s actually a deconstruction of the trope. Lovely and brilliant.

3. Hello Operator, Please Give Me Number Nine. Suzie plays Calvinball with Death. That says it all.

4. OK, I can’t limit myself to one rec of Beer Good Foamy’s stories. In Radio Silence, BtVS’ Gentlemen drop by Night Vale and, as they tend to, take everyone’s voices. If you’re at all familiar with Night Vale, the problem is obvious. Get Some Walking In, a West Wing fanfic the author describes thusly: “Normally, anyone who claims that the US government might have a detailed contingency plan for how to deal with the zombie apocalypse would, of course, get No Comment. Which makes things a bit awkward when CJ has to give a briefing on it.“ Has CJ’s voice down to a T. I honestly would recommend stopping to read all Beer Good Foamy’s stories while your there.

5. From What Seemed Like a Ruin. Bucky Barnes heals and raises / trains a goshawk. OK, and that description sucks, but it’s an excellent story.

Just a note, as I’m writing this, I’m coming up with more stories I absolutely have to rec!

6. In the Light of Two Moons is, sadly, an unfinished work. Babylon 5 meant to be a pairing between Neroon and Catherine Sakai, it starts on a Shadow prison planet after the Shadows have left. Good characterization, great storytelling. I wish there were more.

7. Alive in your blood now. Eeee! Vorkosigan Saga. Another one that’s hard to describe. It touches on social justice, maybe more than touches on, I’d actually call it a theme. Helen Natalia growing up and into her own. Love this.

8. freedom’s just another word for nothing left to lose. Stargate Atlantis. Rodney after he returns to Earth, coming to terms with his grief and being the favorite professor of a few really dedicated students and someone most everyone else just tries to avoid. Lots of feelings and thoughts which, let’s face it, I just adore.

9. The Seduction By Winglets series. Cabin Pressure / Iron Man and/or Marvel Universe. Martin Crieff / Tony Stark. Not crack. Seriously.

So this, apparently, is the minimum I can rec. And I thought I’d get it down to 5! *shakes head*

Day 10
In your own space, share your love for a trope, cliché, kink, motif, or theme. (Or a few!) Tell us what makes it work for you, and why it appeals to you so much. Talk about what you like to see in fanworks featuring that theme most. Feel free to include recs and examples! Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

Hmm, I'd never given this any thought but the stories I return to, time and time again, all contain close relationships, usually romantic but not always.

Cabin Pressure's Martin Crieff dating Tony Stark seems a terribly unlikely relationship but flawed amethyst makes it work in the Seduction By Winglet Series.
As they walked out of the Arrivals gate, Tony was there waiting, looking hopelessly suave and sophisticated in a suit that probably cost more than GERTI and holding a sign that said, Captain Spitfire. )

************

Coneycat's Housemates series puts Loki in the middle of Being Human. It's a great match because they show him how to be monsters without being monstrous. It's really a delightful series.

He landed in the back garden dressed like an extra from Star Wars, his name is Loki, and you still brought him into the house? )

 ************

In Sands of Time, Giles adopts Xander and turns his life completely around. Lovely twist at the end. Giles makes such a great Dad for Xander. Oooh, which reminds me of the scene where Xander first calls Giles "Dad". Eee!

OK, weirdness, right. You probably mean me moving out of my folks' place and in with Giles because I'm tired of my father using me as a punching bag. That weirdness? )

************

In Of Old Mystics, Giles rescues Ethan from the Initiative. As they build a new relationship, they learn they are at the center of a prophecy.

Ah. It was to be the valiant rescue fantasy then. As his hallucinations went, this was quite possibly the worst.  )

************

In Shade More Than Man, Sirius tries to apologize to Snape before tranforming himself, forever, into his animagus form.

Do you remember how you were before Azkaban? )

************

In Tenebrae, the author Mary Sue's herself into season 5 of Buffy. Doesn't sound appealing, I know, but she's an excellent writer and the story is awesome.

Her throat was dry. “Oh my God,” she uttered. “I’m in—Sunnydale—” )

Day 6

Leave feedback for a fanwork. Or multiple fanworks. It can be as simple as I liked this to a detailed list of all the things you loved about the fanwork. The key is to leave some sort of feedback.

If you've already left feedback in the course of a previous challenge, it totally counts. But you're free to leave more feedback.

Afterwards, leave a comment in this post with the equivalent of "I did it!" If you feel so inclined, leave a link to the fanwork you left feedback for so others can check it out.

Commented on Every Rose a BtVS fanfic that Gillo recommended in another Snowflake Challenge post.

Eeee! The Letter "L" Job, a crossover between ... wait for it .... Leverage and Sesame Street! Oh, so awesome. This one was recommended by TP TIgger, also in response to the Snowflake Challenge.

Day 3: In your own space, post recs for at least three fanworks that you did not create. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

BtVS vid: Transparent, a brilliant look at Willow's insecurities.

Firefly vid featuring Wash: When I'm Up, I Can't Get Down

Unravelled doodle. In the author's words "Some doodles from an AU I will probably never write to any sort of completion. The memory spell unravels, and by the same loophole that allowed him to see through the Ben-is-Glory trickery, Spike is the only one that remembers Dawn (and only her actual 9 month existence, no forged memories). Cue a coming-of-age road trip". It's rather unfinished but still tells a delightful story. I wish there were more.

Booster's Ten Things That Never Happend in the BtVS Fandom asks the question "what if the spell to create Dawn was farther reaching than we think" leading to an insert where Dawn was in the storyline from the beginning. Eee, it's just so awesome!

In Her Beauty and Her Terror, Wednesday Addams and Harmony are dating. No. Really.

Hammer Time. Ah, Marcus Rowland, king of the crossover, does it again. 100 words. Three fandoms: BtVS, Galaxy Quest, and The Avengers (the Marvel Avengers, not the super-cool one with Emma Peel).

In Bread, Willow, Tara, and Dawn try to rebuild a family after Buffy's death. There's a bread metaphor running through the story that is absolutely amazing. I also like that we get a sympathetic look at Buffy and Dawn's Dad.

Carmilla, based on Joseph Sheridan Le Fanu's lesbian themed vampire novel of the same name, puts the vampire, Carmilla, into the present and has her fall for her next victim. Set on a campus where supernatural events run rife, it's quite a bit of fun.

Star Trek Continues gives us the last year of the five year mission.

Day 5: In your own space, post recs for at least three fanworks that you did not create.

Yes! One of my favorite challenges. I'm calling this collection the "we are all powerful women together" stories after kwritten's Aftershock, a retelling of Helpless with Dawn in the picture.

There's also Lotesse's Alive in Your Blood Now - I'm not sure how to describe it so I'll just give the author's summary: When the roll call comes to “Vorkosigan,” Helen Natalia smiles, throws back her head, and casts her vote.

And Ruuger's We Make Our Own Magic which is more about a woman being powerful on her own but it still amazing.

Tulipp's Bread. Oh yeah, heart-warming Willow/Tara fic.

I hate tagging this as a "favorite thing" because the quotes are awful but as art this is a brilliant idea.

Doe, A Deer, a Female Deer: The Spirit of Mother Christmas

The whole article is good. Here's a bit about sacred textiles: Mary B. Kelly’s book Goddess Embroideries Of Eastern Europe explores images of the horned deer mother in the sacred textiles of women. The image of the mother goddess Rohanitsa is often shown with antlers and gives birth to deer as well as children. For her feast day in late December (most likely solstice) white iced cookies shaped like deer were given as presents or good luck tokens, and red and white embroidery depicting her image were displayed.

A friend was talking about Eddie Redmayne and how she and her husband had never seen any of his films. Not sure who that actor was, I looked him up. He was in The Danish Girl which I have seen and adored.

Last night we were discussing traditional costumes - triangles of contrasting colors sewn onto outfits - that distinguished home location / family line. Today I ran aross a link to this in my Tumblr feed: The tribespeople of Wadi Mahram, separated by only a few kilometres, wear similar dress but with details that distinguish each branch of the tribe from the others.

In out-of-the-way places of the heart,
Where your thoughts never think to wander,
This beginning has been quietly forming,
Waiting until you were ready to emerge.

For a long time it has watched your desire,
Feeling the emptiness growing inside you,
Noticing how you willed yourself on,
Still unable to leave what you had outgrown.

It watched you play with the seduction of safety
And the gray promises that sameness whispered,
Heard the waves of turmoil rise and relent,
Wondered would you always live like this.

Then the delight, when your courage kindled,
And out you stepped onto new ground,
Your eyes young again with energy and dream,
A path of plenitude opening before you.

Though your destination is not yet clear
You can trust the promise of this opening;
Unfurl yourself into the grace of beginning
That is at one with your life's desire.

Awaken your spirit to adventure;
Hold nothing back, learn to find ease in risk;
Soon you will be home in a new rhythm,
For your soul senses the world that awaits you.

Reed,

slashed and torn
but doubly rich—
such great heads as yours
drift upon temple-steps,
but you are shattered
in the wind.

Myrtle-bark
is flecked from you,
scales are dashed
from your stem,
sand cuts your petal,
furrows it with hard edge,
like flint
on a bright stone.

Yet though the whole wind
slash at your bark,
you are lifted up,
aye—though it hiss
to cover you with froth.

I've been reviewing stories to rec for the WIcked Awards and just finished rereading Bread. It's a Tara/Willow story where making bread is a metaphor for living your life. It's a beautiful story.
