dragonyphoenix: Blackadder looking at scraps of paper, saying "It could use a beta" (Katchoo)
Since AO3 provides a list of my stories, I'll just lists some of my favorites and stats from 2014.

Top 5 of my own stories from 2014:

  • In a Corner of My Soul - Giles as the big bad of season 1. Quite a bit of editing went into this and I think it shows.

  • The Man - What if Xander were the new James Bond? This is a very meta story touching on movies, fandom, Hollywood.

  • On This Side of Goodbye - I've given up on the comics but still I've written my own version of how Giles was brought back as a 12 year old. Mine is funnier than Joss'. Just saying.

  • Sailing Towards the Dawn - Babylon 5: During his hitchhiking days, Stephen realizes he isn't just running way. He's running to something, even if he doesn't know what it is yet. There is some great characterization in here and a kicker ending.

  • Without a Passport - I'm getting pretty good at Anya's voice so I had to include one example even if it isn't one of the funnier ones.

Top 5 by hits according to AO3:

  1. Shanshu - pickamix asked for a story where Spike shanshus because of his sacrifice in "Chosen". I've also given him amnesia because, well, more fun!

  2. And If My Love Had Never Let Me Go - canon!Ethan messing with an Ethan and Rupert who had never broken up. Just because he can. This is a crossover with a graphic novel called The Unwritten and touches on other fandoms as they jump universes.

  3. Special Delivery - I was playing with voice and picked Willy's because it's so distinctive.

  4. The Revelatory Power of the Feminist Revolution is Obvious, Right? - This was hugely popular on Twisting the Hellmouth. Crossover with I Dream of Jeannie. She seems sweet and all, but damn can Jeannie be stubborn. But then again, so can Willow.

  5. The Pen is Mightier - When Ethan turns Giles into a rabbit, you can imagine Anya's reaction.

Top 5 by Kudos:

  1. Shanshu

  2. The Pen is Mightier

  3. Please Come Again - Anya. Sexual humor. Need I say more?

  4. Alone - one of the runner-ups when I was working on my top 5 list (of my own stories). Written for a prompt: Buffyverse, Giles, it's the end of the world again, but this time he's alone.

  5. Goblin Market - Ah, Drusilla. It's been ages since I've written her.

And a special shout out to Dinner, No Movie, from 2013, which has almost 30 times more hits than any other story I've posted to AO3.

In your own space, post a rec for at least three fanworks that you have created. It can be your favorite fanworks that you've created, or fanworks you feel no one ever saw, or fanworks you say would define you as a creator. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

I mostly write BtVS but, ages and ages ago as in so long ago dinosaurs roamed the earth, I did write other fandoms. I thought I'd share a variety of my fandoms:

  1. Firefly: Their Fourth Attempt at a First Date. This was written for a prompt: Referencing Simon and Kaylee, their fourth date is their first real date. I ended up changing one of the first three dates because the other person who responded to the prompt came up with the exact same first three dates that I did and managed to post before me.

  2. Leverage: It was hard to pick just one but Snow Angels. It's AU because I'd only seen the first season but had heard they were in Boston for the second season. A short look at Hardison and Parker's attraction.

  3. I've only ever written one Harry Potter story. I've only ever written on Batman story. This is it. Supervillian Snape was written for the most awesome prompt I've ever seen. Snape moves to Gotham City and everybody thinks he's a supervillian.

  4. BtVS: Mark It With 'D'. I had a lot of Buffy-verse stories to choose from. I picked this because I like the interplay of nursery rhyme and story. I also like the imagery: the red words were so bright against the eggshell white of the walls that they almost seemed to be shouting.

dragonyphoenix: Blackadder looking at scraps of paper, saying "It could use a beta" (Francine angel)
BtVS
Late: Wish!verse. It's bad to be out after dark in Sunnydale.
For a Very Important Date. Someone who doesn't like rabbits isn't going to be impressed with Alice in Wonderland.
The Kiss: Spander. First kiss.
Unusual: What Kendra learned in Sunnydale.
Red Death's Mask: Death had worn red to the Masque, and so, beneath her golden mask, Drusilla wore a gown as red as flowing blood.
Wet: Season 3, just after Bad Girls. Faith's thoughts after Buffy left.
Mark it With 'D': Drusilla thinking in nursery rhymes.
First Steps: Willow as she read through Miss Calendar's links on magic.
The Bones of Winter: Tara's thoughts as she leaves Willow.
Be Seeing You ...: Season 2. Halloween. Ethan waiting for Ripper to return.
Moments of Happiness: Between seasons 4 & 5. Willow's thoughts while she's in England.
Now You're Cooking With Gas!: Anya agrees with the Buffybot that Spike is hot.
One Last Look: After that episode when Angel fights with Riley, Angel takes one last look before leaving town.
Carnival: Season 5ish. Buffy has a nightmare.
Now is Not a Good Time: Pre-series. How the Master got trapped in that church.
In the Middle of a Mistake: How Ripper and Ethan met.
That First Taste of True Fear: Remember that episode where a ghost (The First?) shared his pain with Angel, pain about a scene that Angelus had set up for him (the ghosty guy) to find? Angelus watching that guy find his daughters.
A New Man: More of a scene than a story. Ethan trying to fit into Rupert's world after Ripper left him.
Falling: You remember that episode where, after achieving perfect happiness, Angel loses his soul? Well, there's always been something that bugs me about it. “Bugs!” I said “Bugs”. *cracks up laughing*
Dead Kennedys: Same as the next link but a funnier ending.
Darkness Unspoken: Angel thinking on the differences between him and Buffy.
All This and Heaven To: Buffy's thoughts after she's pulled out of Heaven.
Cupcake: Dawn's first birthday after she learns she's the key.
I'd Rather Do It This Way: Jonathan talking with his therapist.
Yielding to Temptation: Season 1. Willow's thoughts as she gets Cordy to hit the Delete key during The Harvest.
Catherine was Great: A drabble from Catherine Madison's PoV.
Actions Speak Louder: Assigning a new Watcher to Faith and Buffy didn't go as smoothly as the Council had hoped.
Blood: Remember the Master rising from that pool of blood in the first episode? Where did all that blood come from?
When Dreams Fall: Pre-series. How Rupert felt when he first learned he was expected to become a Watcher.
Coffee, a Visit to a Satanic Ritual, and Then Bed: Comics. One of the Slayers finds another calling.
Spell Components: Comics. Spike saved a bunch of cats and brought them to Buffy's apartment.
A Funeral In Her Heart: Buffy doesn't like seeing Spike looking so ill when he's chained in the bathtub.
And Would You Drink Poison for Me: That moment when only Dru knows Spike loves Buffy.
It Can't Be Love: Season 7. Buffy doesn't want to know what the spell is showing her. Good Anya voice if I do say so myself.
Nevermore: Season 7. Spike adds meaning to Dawn's word play.
That I Might, With Thee, Fade Away: Between seasons 6 & 7. Spike wasn't invited to Buffy's funeral.
Masks: Season 2. Ripper had emerged but only momentarily. The dark core was still there but masked by the amiable and bland librarian: raw brutality below a facade of conformity, the exact opposite of Halloween.
Dinner, No Movie: Post-series. AU. Spike and Buffy's first get-together after he went up in smoke for her. She didn't know he was back.

The Blood is the Life series. Comics. AU.

  1. The Blood is the Life: When Spike shows up at the castle half-dead, Buffy will do whatever it takes to save him.

  2. The Five Sisters Zoo: Gathering spell components to bring Spike out of that coma.

  3. White Billowing Smoke: Of course the ritual to save Spike doesn't go as it should.

  4. Mood Ring: There's been a bit of a glitch with Willow's spell.

Without the Lion: Season 4. AU. Given that libraries have been shown to not be safe, you'd think Willow would study somewhere else.
Sibling Rivalry: Comics. AU. Crossover with Sleepy Hollow. The new Watcher is hot but British, and Faith just doesn't have much luck with the Brits.
The Morning After: Season 4 (I think). In the Responsible Adults verse, the story Three for the Road brings Joyce, Ethan, and Rupert together. This is an alternate look at how the next morning might have gone if Rupert was so hung over he didn't remember any of it.
Lessons from Machiavelli: Comics. AU. Crossover with Lost in Space. Buffy isn't that impressed with the new Watcher Giles has selected.
Droopy Dog Will Save You: Season 1. As the Slayerettes form, Xander misses his best friend.

Original Fic
She Eats Brains: I was trying to write a demon and came up with a serial killer instead.
Guardian Angel: Based on an anecdote about Emperor Norton, this story was written for a class project using characters created by other students in the class.

Cool meme, found on Gabrielle and pickamix's sites. I didn't necessarily stick to just the first line, but did keep it in the first paragraph.

LJ's updated editor isn't cooperating with me lately so this year's summary is posted on DreamWidth.

dragonyphoenix: Blackadder looking at scraps of paper, saying "It could use a beta" (could use a beta)

Far fewer stories this year. I've been busy with English classes and also with a novel writing class that runs from October through sometime in the summer. Don't expect a novel out of me anytime soon though. That thing is a huge chaotic mess.

BtVS as Dragon's Phoenix

All of these are short – Monster at nine pages is the longest – and most are pure drabbles.

I wrote Monster as a sequel to skargasm's FrankenSpike's Creation because I couldn't help wondering how Xander would react once he realized he was a copy created to kill his beloved. I love this story because I think I do a good job of increasing the tension, of ratcheting it up in each chapter.

This drabble, based on the prompt of doorway, was me playing with metaphors. I frequently look at Angelus and Darla, and how they might interact with or attack Dru before she was Turned. This isn't one of my better efforts.

Playing with metaphors again or at least trying to, I wrote two drabbles playing with the prompt of wind, where Angelus tries to protect Drusilla. You can see why they wanted someone else to take that on.

Fireworks, still playing with metaphors, showing Spike yearning for Xander. Because I love Spander. ;-) It has a beautiful last line.

Tiny Suns in the Dark also responds to the fireworks prompt. This time Spike tries, not quite successfully, to keep Dru away from sparklers, “those little fireballs that shot off vamp-killing sparks.”

Nobody Told Her delves into what Faith was thinking on her way to Sunnydale. I think I got her voice down fairly well and like what I did with this one.

Games is basically Buffy and Willow chatting about schoolwork during that time when Buffy has been expelled from school and is waiting to get back in.

In Cerebus the Dork, two of the three geeks are being dorky while Warren is acting like a jerk. An Open on Sunday prompt of comic(s) allowed me to reference Cerebus the Aardvark, which I followed avidly in college.

In The First of Her White Dresses, a sick Dru explains to Spike why she's started wearing white. I rather like the Dru-logic of it.

And I Shall Defend My Queen references so many things: a graphic novel called Hatter M which is loosely based on the Alice in Wonderland books; Joss' Fray!verse since this library is supposed to be the one that Fray finds; Babylon 5 because that bit with the bowler hat is what Lt. Corbin does after the comic duo of Rebo and Zooty visit B5. Not bad for 100 words, huh? And I think I did a great job with Andrew's voice here.

Seashell was supposed to be the metaphor but instead Dru sees the tides carrying Spike away. It's a nicely sparse and evocative story.

While playing with the nest metaphor I wondered where Drusilla might go after Angelus killed her family but before she chose to join the convent. Suicide's a Sin came out of that.

Feeding: This dark!Willow fic references a couple of ideas from the comics, that Willow survives long enough to be in the Fray!verse and that Willow has gone dark. What does Willow do first once magic returns to the world? Aaargh, and I'm kicking myself for not having a gingerbread house on the table at Willow's place!

Falling from Darkness to Light is another drabble written to play with a metaphor, falling this time. It looks at the moment Dru realizes that Spike no longer loves her. Nicely done, even if I do say so myself.

Dust Drifting Like Snowflakes in the Snowy Wastes: What can I say? I adore writing about the desolation after love has been lost. And I'm very fond of Spander. ;-) The last line is killer, which also makes me happy.

By Their Fruits Shall Ye Know Them depicts Wesley's thoughts as he overhears Giles and Buffy choosing to keep the Council out of the loop after Faith had killed Mr. Finch. I tried to suggest that Wesley is more upset that Buffy didn't go to him than he is that they are planning to go around the Council's rules, but I'm not sure how well I pulled it off.

In We Have Met the Enemy and He Is Us, I've condensed a series of complex emotions down into a drabble. Yeah me! It's Willow's thoughts the night after Xander's yellow crayon speech has stopped her from destroying the world. The title is based on the comic strip Pogo.

With Lighting the Tree I was going for a drabble but couldn't condense it down enough. This was my Solstice story for 2012. A happy Giles/Ethan moment. And the ending is nicely ambiguous – but still happy either way you look at it – which makes me happy.

Squee!!! Zombies on the Beach is so much fun! In a drabble, two characters – both Faith and Ethan – have arcs. You learn that Ethan had staged a zombie attack and that Giles is dead. I love how much I crammed into this little story. *does happy dance*

The title for Plummeting from the Nest comes from a Babylon 5 episode. After Vir has been discovered helping Narns escape, Londo tells that some birds fly from the nest but that Vir has plummeted, fallen on his beak, and needs to helped gently back into the nest. The story suggests that Wesley is such an ass when he first gets to Sunnydale because he knows he's not prepared to be a Watcher.

VelvetWhip asked ShakenSilence for an Angel rapes Willow story. I, who tend to write my more violent stories when I'm upset, heard about the request shortly before holiday stress kicked in. Since I really can't see Angel – not Angelus – raping Willow, I played up the guilt side of things in With My Thoughts Wandering In the Dark.

Since I just finished writing Yearning. Oh Gods. The Pain., I'm too close to the story to say if it's good or bad. This sequel to Zombies on the Beach depicts Ethan shortly after he's learned that Giles is dead.

BtVS as Lucy Ash

This is where my dirty, bad, wrong stories live.

A Bad Influence remix - Part 1, Part 2 - plays with a story written by Hello Spikey. The original is better than mine.

Original

Shattering Like Broken Glass is a response to the prompt of plastic, although the metaphor I play with here is glass. I was thinking of how the glass windows of my childhood sparkled when struck by sunlight, unlike the less breakable plastic windows we have today. I have no idea where the priest or the assassin came from.

dragonyphoenix: Francine from Strangers in Paradise (Francine)
In which I seem to have way too much time on my hands...

I decided to pick my favorites of all the stories I've written. It's been an interesting exercise. I've noticed that some of my more interesting stories were written for Taming the Muse prompts. I'd stopped writing there a while back when I got sick, but I think it's time to pick it up again.

I've also gone through my LiveJournal postings to find my most popular postings, based on reader responses. I was too lazy to do that on fanfiction.net as well, but I can tell you my most popular story over there without looking, Supervillian Snape, a Harry Potter and Batman crossover.

The Phantasmagoria community got me wondering about which stories I'd written can be mapped to a specific episode. Note: some of these could fit into canon while others touch on an episode and veer off to a very AU story.

Post a single sentence from each WIP you have (or as many as you want to pick). No context, no explanations. No more than one sentence.

I was going to review these stories and had thought I'd typed them in but can't find them now so a summary it is. I started with 2008 because 1) I hadn't summarized that year's worth of stories yet and 2) when I thought it was going to be a review I wanted to go with older stories because I thought the distance in time would give me more perspective so I could provide a fairer review.

One Shots

Title:: Butterscotch
Characters/Pairing: Angelus, Dru, Xander, Willow
Summary: "His pain, it tastes like butterscotch."
Notes: First story I wrote. The Hallmark moment, where Angelus says "care enough to send the very best, in dead friends" is an excellent reminder of why I should not try to be clever when I'm writing.

Title: Halloween on the Hellmouth
Characters/Pairing: Willow/Oz, Buffy/Scott Hope, Xander, Jonathan, Debbie/Pete, Giles
Summary: Come on, it's Halloween in Sunnydale. You know something is gonna go wrong.
Notes: I rather like all the details in this one. A log of the stuff I do to Jonathan is based on stuff that has happened to my-geeky-self.

Title: Sunset
Characters/Pairing: Angel
Summary: Buffy's dying. There's only one cure but is the price too high?
Notes:I liked it when I wrote it.

Title: As She Shouted Out With Glee
Characters/Pairing: Spike/Dru
Summary:Most people had unconscious objections, blocks, belief systems that prevented them from doing extraordinary things but not Drusilla; not realizing that they were impossible, she just went ahead and did them.
Notes: One of my favorites.

Title: Then I'll Take Your Hand
Characters/Pairing: Spike/Dru
Summary: Spike is haunted by his past.
Notes: Nice look at Dru's perspective on Spike, which is so much more pragmatic than how he looks at the world.

Lily Out of Water

Lily Out of Water was the first series I wrote although I hadn't planned for it to be a series. I wrote the first story, then a second, then a third, and so on. There are notes that talk about each story.

Title: The Bloom on the Rose, Part 1, Part 2, Part 3
Characters/Pairing: Angelus, Willow, Spike, Dru
Summary: When Angel loses his soul, Angelus, wanting to control the power of a witch, grabs Willow.
Notes:Given that this is one of the earlier stories I've written, it's much better than I'd expect althoug a bit heavy on the exposition.

Title: Where Candles are Lit, Blossoms Fall
Characters/Pairing: Angelus, Dru, Willow, Spike
Summary: The four aren't getting alone causing Angelus to assert his dominance.
Notes: First time I'd written from Drusilla's PoV (a middle section of this story). I love the bit where Angelus' description of his hunt is interspersed with poetry he's reciting.  Ooh, and you can tell, based on the titles, when I started reading haiku.  ;-)

Title: Paper Roses
Characters/Pairing: Willow, Paul Smith (my creation), Angelus, Spike, Dru
Summary: Angelus wants and artifact that the Council is holding and Willow realizes Angelus is using her.

Title: The Scattering of Cherry Blossoms
Characters/Pairing: Willow, Spike, Xander, Angleus, Dru
Summary: Things fall apart. After she hits rock bottom, Willow sees she has to leave Spike if she's going to heal.
Notes: As always, I love watcing Angelus manipulate Spike.

Title: Falling Petals Carry Moonlight, Part 1, Part 2
Characters/Pairing:Spike/Willow, Wesley Wyndham-Price, Lady Marjorie Westriding (mine)
Summary: Brings Willow and Spike back together
Notes: I think this is the best story in the Lily Out of Water series. I've certainly gotten better at working in the exposition. Seeing how Wesley has changed since Season 3 inspired me to write the Lotus in Muddy Water series.

Title: Touching the Ashes of Fallen Flowers, Part 1, Part 2
Characters/Pairing: Drusilla, Angel(us), Aidan Taylor (mine), Lady Marjorie Westriding (mine), Willow, Spike, Wesley, Anael/Andy/Annie (mine)
Summary: Willow, to save them from the Council, resoul Angelus and Dru. Getting your soul back is hard on any vampire but Dru was mad before she was turned...
Notes: I created a prophecy to convince Taylor to go along with the resouling so I might be writing a sequel at some point. Actually posted in 2009 but I wanted to keep it with the rest of the series.
