Post the first sentence in you ten last fanfics, and see if you can draw any conclusions. - taken from scripsi's page
  1. There are two techniques by which discarnate demons, pure or, more accurately, impure spirits, may obtain influence within the human realm. - In a Corner of My Soul, a BtVS story with Giles as the Big Bad of Season 1
  2. With the water of the fountain splashing behind her, Willow stared over at Xander. - All Hail the Queen (the There Can Be Only One remix), BtVS
  3. After the war, Granny’d been forced out of welding.- Watching for Her Chance, Life on Mars
  4. Warm milk was best when one couldn’t sleep. - Warm Milk, Harvey
  5. He’d told himself he couldn’t violate tradition. - Fitly Done ... From Now On, BtVS
  6. He waited until the other mourners had left. - Prodigal Son, BtVS
  7. Some rules mattered, sure, but working a memory spell, that didn’t break any rules because there were no rules about spells.- Rules, BtVS
  8. Dear Professor Snape, Giles said to tell you – again – that there is nothing wrong with our herbs. - The Letters (the 84, Charing Cross Road remix), BtVS / Harry Potter
  9. He spent the early hours of the evening waiting (hoping) to hear the doorbell, but perhaps carolers didn’t sing at apartments and so Giles - after loading his pockets with a stake, a cross, and Holy Water - went out into the night. - Bethlehem Seek This Holy Night, BtVS
  10. The few working lights barely made a dent in the darkness, which was why backing the Carmaro in was not such a bright idea, not that you could tell Phil that. - Business Opportunity, BtVS
Not all of them grab my attention as I would have hoped and some of the don't give a good idea of what the story is about. I do like how well I caught some voices, in particular Willow's, Anya's, and Willy's.

And here are some for in-process works
  1. The boy had taken the tears and yet he lingered. - From Ember and Ashes, a BtVS / Harry Potter crossover that will eventually at least suggest Snape / Anya.
  2. Seven sparrows froze outside my window one night. Seven Sparrows, Original
  3. Gwen’s eyes had been stolen but she hadn’t noticed. - Eyes, Original but world strongly influenced by Buffy
The last two fit quite well with the themes / plots of the stories. For a reader familiar with the Harry Potter novels, the first says that Snape's dying which, in a story about Snape, is an interesting place to start.

Day 8: In your own space, post self-recs for at least three fanworks that you created. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

Apparently I'm supposed to be embarrassed about rec'cing my own fics? Not really, although picking through all my stories does make me wish I'd taken more time with a good number of them. And, all worksafe here.

Oh, But You're a Pretty Thing. BtVS Drabble. Angelus will follow Darla anywhere.

The Letters (the 84, Charing Cross Road Remix), a Snape/Anya story I wrote for the Circle of Friends remix, depicts a relationship in letters, e-mails, and wedding invitations.

One Zombie Two Zombie Red Zombie Dead Zombie. The BtVS episode "The Zeppo" if written by Dr. Seuss.

Marzipan, a Leverage fanfic, shows us Parkers first friend.

Sailing Towards the Dawn. Babylon 5. Dr. Franklin's hitchhiking days. He's running towards something, even if he doesnt' know it yet.

On This Side of Goodbye. BtVS. A Giles and Faith friendship fic.
This is the first time I tried a writing exercise: take your first sentence and rewrite it again and again and again. It did greatly improve the beginning of my story:
The room, red and gold everywhere, looked like someone’s virgin kid was about to be debauched. For all that Big Al had ranted on about intentions being a heavy-duty deal for the ritual, the room he’d dumped them in wasn’t raising anything pure in Faith’s thoughts. Taking one look at the overly-stuffed velvet chairs, she decided to stand. Angel was sitting. Of course Angel was sitting. He’d been practically shitting guilt ever since he, or Twilight using his body, had killed Giles. Faith was sort of surprised he hadn’t found a bed of nails to lie on. “What is it with magic users and furniture?” She kicked at one of the chairs. “I’d rather be strung up on a rack than sit on this thing. Is it some sort of prereq for the job, never being comfortable again?”

Restfield saw my request for a story image and made me this! Quick work too, less than a day. Isn't it awesome?

Day 03

In your own space, post a rec for at least three fanworks that you have created. It can be your favorite fanworks that you've created, or fanworks you feel no one ever saw, or fanworks you say would define you as a creator. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

Mostly Buffyverse:
The Letters (the 84, Charing Cross Road remix): cross-over between Harry Potter and Buffy the Vampire Slayer written for the Circle of Friends remix. I always enjoy taking part in CoF because it takes me outside of my box, allows me to try styles of writing I hadn't before. This story depicts a relationship in letters, e-mails, and wedding invitations.

Pulling a Rabbit Out: Anya/Giles during Tabula Rasa. Humor. “Sex relieves stress. We should have sex.”

One Zombie Two Zombie Red Zombie Dead Zombie: another out-of-the-box story, "The Zeppo" as written by Dr. Seuss.

Sailing Toward the Dawn: I just love this one. Babylon 5 set during the days when Dr. Franklin was hitchiking through the stars. Stephen realizes he isn't just running way. He's running to something, even if he doesn't know what it is yet.

A Note From a Memory You Never Had: BtVS but Fray!verse (comics). The library, abandoned for over a century, is unexpected but not as much as the note left for her.

Feeding: Dark!Willow. This one also depends on the Fray!verse. Willow's first concern when magic returns to the world.

Marzipan: Leverage: Of course teen-age Parker's first adult friend would be a woman the rest of the kids are scared of.

Edited:
I'm adding In a Corner of My Soul. I'm rereading it in preparation of finishing the next chaper or two. I'd forgotten how good it actually is. *grin*

In response to The Letters (Snape/Anya) I got this: Come to think of it, I'd not be surprised to hear that Voldemort is due to a vengeance wish granted by Anya's friend (the one who helps children)....Can't you just picture it? Suddenly little Tom Riddle gets his wish granted in the orphanage...

Okay, I'm not writing it, but I'd love to read it. ;-)

In the Circle of Friends remix, the story I'd chosen to remix is itself a remix of another story. Since my transformative works policy, if I had thought it out formally, would pretty much be "You want to play with my stories? Whee! Go ahead. (Just link back and credit me)." it never occurred to me to okay a remix with the author of the original story.

Right, that sounds confusing. So, I'll give them names. In the CoF remix, I was assigned the works of IAmPrincessX. So I looked at her stories and the one I picked is a remix of a story by Y_TheLastMan. (Note: genders should not be thought of as descriptive of the people in question. I picked X and Y because they are, mathematically, the first unknown variable identifiers I go with, and those are the first names that came up for X and Y.) Since IAmPrincessX is participating in the remix, I already have her permission to remix a story. Until yesterday, basically the day I finished my draft, I did not think to check if Y_TheLastMan would be okay with a remix, and actually I didn't think of it so much as stumble across a transformative works policy which says I love having work created off of mine but "Please do not remix my written works. I am much more comfortable when that is done in the context of a remix fest that I am participating in myself." So I explained my situation and Y_TheLastMan said please don't post that story.

By the way, I completely agree with Y_TheLastMan's right to squelch a remix of the story -
(I really mean this. No dissing of Y_TheLastMan. I don’t understand why an author might say “you can’t play with my story” since we are all already playing with stories created by others, but I do understand that some people can get quite upset when someone else has played with one of their stories.)
- but ...

*sigh*

I put a lot of time and energy into it. It's a crossover. I not only watched two seasons of Buffy, I also watched all of the Harry Potter movies. I've written three drafts of 2930, 5831, and 8566 words respecitvely. After shifting years around so that Harry Potter events could happen during Buffy seasons, I made a 20 page timeline. The story is told all in letters; I created a spreadsheet to say if this letter left from this place on this day, it would get there on what day.

Even more frustraging, I was so excited about the story. One of the things I adore abut the CoF remix, is that I write outside of my box. The format for this story comes from Helene Hanff's _84, Charing Cross Road_. (It's a charming story. If you haven't read it, I highly recommend it.) It was quite exciting to work out the contents of all those letters and show the growing relationship through them. *sigh* again.

Hugs? Please?

Anyone have a suggestion for a middle name for Severus Snape?
dragonyphoenix: Blackadder looking at scraps of paper, saying "It could use a beta" (drac)
In honor of snogged's awesome Hermione icon ... One Halloween, most likely shortly after the first book had come out, Dad was greeting trick or treaters. He was going through the 'what are you dressed as?' ritual and one of the girls rolled her eyes in a 'great, another adult who doesn't recognize my costume' manner. Then Dad said, "And you're Hermione." Cheered her right up.

Since I'm getting into HP, I thought I'd share fan created stuff.

Artistic Fool's Discovering Magic is brilliantly written and has a super fun plot. There's a way of relating to magic which is considered dark magic because it's associated with older wizarding families, the kind that supported Voldemort. Bill Weasley practices it. Harry is curious. Unfortunately this story has been abandoned by the writer.

Deco's By Baker Street Station, I Sat Down and Wept diverges dramatically from canon. Petunia as an abused wife. Petunia develops magic as an adult. Petunia raises her boys - Harry's as dear to her as Dudley - in the wizarding world. In fact, a kick-ass Petunia pretty much takes on the wizarding world. Quite a fun read.

Acamar's Shade More Than Man: Sirius, mentally damanged by his time in Azkaban and by the war, ends up being cared for by Snape of all people.

My Supervillain Snape was written for the most awesome prompt ever: Snape moves to Gotham City and everyone thinks he's a supervillain.

Snape/Lily: The Prince's Tale. A fanvid following Snape's arc, using drawn images from a variety of sources.
dragonyphoenix: Blackadder looking at scraps of paper, saying "It could use a beta" (Blackadder)

Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince: A review, well more like random thoughts, combining notes from the movie and the novel

In the movie, I wish they'd show the scene with Fleur at the Burrow over Christmas ragging on Mrs. Weasley's taste in music. )
dragonyphoenix: Blackadder looking at scraps of paper, saying "It could use a beta" (Blackadder)
So I'm reading an alchemy book and it says: The symbol of Albedo is the White Queen. I immediately think, "Oh, that's why Albus (Dumbledore) is gay. He's the white queen."
