dragonyphoenix: (buffy)
I've posted the Nightmares chapter of In a Corner of My Soul. Ethan comes to town. Buffy learns that Giles stabbed Owen. Giles finally gets his hands on an artifact that will allow him to kill Angel bothers the agents the Council sent to take Giles down since this makes him even more dangerous.

The story is available, by scenes rather than by chapters, on fanfiction.net.

“So, an escalator huh?”

Willow had stopped responding. She wouldn't even look at him and, wait, was her hair getting darker? He really didn't want to have to flee to Mexico again especially since there was no Jonathan to flee with this time.

“I'd always thought the road to Hell would be more of a water slide than a road. You know, once you get on then you're sliding down and you can't stop even if you want to, not until you hit bottom except that in this case the bottom would be Hell instead of water but water slides are sort of fun so I'm not sure that works. Maybe it's more like an elevator. You don't think anything about it when you get on because you're busy ignoring the other passengers and listening to the Muzak – sort of like Zach on B5, except he didn't listen to Muzak, when he accepted the Night Watch armband, not realizing they're all evil and stuff – and then you realize that you're on an elevator straight to Hell – again like Zach because he started seeing that Night Watch was bad but he couldn't get out, not until the Captain and Garibaldi asked him to turn on the Night Watch, but that doesn't work either because in an elevator you can always push a button and stop at the next floor. So maybe it's more like a cartoon, like when Wile E Coyote runs off the cliff but he doesn't fall because he doesn't know there's air under his feet but then he does see there's no ground and that's when he falls.”

Willow didn't look any happier. As Andrew held on tightly, the handrail rumbled in his grip. He glanced behind and up and then back down again. The escalator vanished off into the distance both above and below them. “So, an escalator huh?”

Summary: When Warren was working on the invisibility ray, the first couple of crystals didn't work.

“Look and wonder, boys, look and wonder.”

Neither Andrew nor Jonathan looked up from the tv. “Can it wait? Luke is about to blow up the Death Star.”

“Oh, yeah, that’s a great part.” Warren joined them, standing behind the couch and staring at the tv for about thirty seconds. “No, it can’t wait.” He reached down, grabbed the remote, and turned off the tv.

“Hey.” They both stood.

Warren held up a bag. “This is it, boys. My chance to defeat the Slayer.”

“Bed, Bath, and Beyond?” Jonathan asked.

Warren fumbled in the bag. “Not that,” he said, throwing the bag to the ground. “This.” He held up a crystal. “New and improved. Insert it into the invisibility gun and, bam, it’s ready to go.”

“This crystal’s gonna be better than the last one, right?” Jonathan asked. “Cause that whole melting my Heinlein collection … I really don’t want to go there again.”

“Not to worry, not to worry. I got a supplier who knows what he’s doing.”

“Have you ever thought about the phrase new and improved?” Andrew asked. “How can something that’s new have already been improved? I mean, if it’s improved, that implies it’s been around a while and therefore not new.”

Warren hit the side of Andrew’s head. “Ow.”

“What does it matter? The invisibility ray is ready to go.” He fit the crystal into the gun. “And now the test.” He aimed the gun at the black swivel chair. Sparks flew out of the gun, shooting up into the air. Warren dropped the gun.

“Hey,” Jonathan said. “That was new.”

“Yeah,” Andrew added. “It never exploded before.”

“Shut up,” Warren shouted. “Just, shut up.”

“New supplier not looking so good right about now, is he?”

“I should have known better than to trust one of Willy’s deals.”

“I am Hatter Madigan, and I shall defend my Queen.” As the comic hit the table, Andrew stood and donned his top hat. Well, it was really more of a bowler that someone had abandoned at the library, but that didn't matter. He was a Hatter and could make do with the materials at hand. Stretching out one arm, he nodded his head to the right, intending to roll the hat along his arm and grab it with a dramatic flourish. The hat fell to the floor.

He left the hat where it was. After the final battle, after he'd lost everyone, Andrew had tried to find the remaining Slayers. And he had found them: in London, Paris, New York. After his ribs had been broken, he'd stopped looking.

Since then he'd taken over an obscure Council library. His signature still worked on the legal side of things, and he'd even been able to secure funds for new books. Someday a new hero would rise, and he would preserve the knowledge until that day, until the day that she needed it.

“Giles, I can’t tell. Is it a demon?”

Buffy pointed down Sunnydale’s main drag, to a figure walking, well jittering might have been a more accurate description, toward the Espresso Pump.

“Hmmm?” Giles looked up. Blinked. Rubbed his glasses and blinked again. “Um, demons don’t usually wear spandex long johns.”

“Neither do humans.”

It looked something like a man, although one with bugged-out eyes, dressed all in red with a coffee cup on its head. While they looked at it, uncertain what to do, a high-pitched squeal pierced the night.

“Oh God, Andrew is running straight toward it.” Giving Giles a look, she added, “I suppose I have to save him?”

“Um, from kissing its feet?”

“Ewww,” was Buffy’s battle-cry as she ran into the fray and pulled Andrew away from the whatever-it-was.

“Hey,” Andrew shouted, struggling to get away. By the time they’d looked up, it was gone. Andrew’s eyes were wide with joy as he asked, “Did you see him? I can’t believe I got to meet Too Much Coffee Man!”

“Huh?” Buffy asked. “That wasn’t a demon?”

“Demon?” Andrew snorted. “Didn’t you recognize him? He’s from this comic strip, well really he’s got his own book now…”

As Buffy looked over with a desperate stare, Giles backed away swiftly and silently. Demons he knew how to defeat; geeks on the other hand…
