I've had this happen before. There was one story that I thought wasn't dark at all, possibly because when I was working on it I'd been going through ending variations and some of them did work out to happy endings. The version I posted (http://dragonyphoenix.livejournal.com/19371.html) did not have a happy ending. I should have realized when velvetwhip commented on how dark it was, but noooo. Then the mod from darker_vault said "come post it here". I still didn't think it was dark. I still didn't think it was dark. When I got the "I really want to hit you now" comment, that's when I figured it really must be dark!
