What I did today
Mar. 6th, 2008 11:41 pmTreated myself to lunch at my favorite shish kebob place, went to the falls, and wrote this:
Surging from yesterday’s rain, the roaring river explodes waves out of the water. Cascading over the falls, the water leaps back up as it hits rock bottom. Erupting over the slower water at the base of the falls, the rushing tumult throws off a haze, hinting at rainbows.
Racing against the cliff that edges the river, the water leaps over submerged rocks. Countless waves crash over each other. A tree drifts gently downriver in the turbulence.
Mid-river, a jetty of rocks creates a backwater. Logs and flotsam twirl about like twigs, finally settling on the rocks, only to be swirled off again by another wave. A small green cooler, bright against the muddy water, is pulled to the falls, only to be launched downstream by the storm of falling water, and then caught in the backwater again, driven by uncontrollable forces in an endless loop.
One single bird, a black dot, flying low against the turbulent current, disappears into the distance.
