This is my favorite Christmas song. I'm not sure I can explain why I love this song so much, but I can describe it. The point of view is a homeless person in Dicken's London, someone searching for a place to stay that evening: at first hoping can go home with the lamplighter, and then giving up and that and thinking about slipping into the belltower and bringing a stray dog for warmth. This person's hope and what they actually think they can have are diminishing. Interspersed is the voice of a child narrating the story of Christ's birth. It's a beautiful and evocative song.
