Back in 2008 - 2009, litgal ran the Character Challenge. Each month she took a description of a character trait to create a prompt for the community. It led to some fascinating original characters and stories. Unfortunately it was short lived but the books she referenced are listed on the profile page. Also, I'll include them below. I'm focusing on job search prep at the moment but I really want to delve into them and improve my characterization.
- 45 Master Characters: Mythic Models for Creating Original Characters by Victoria Lynn Schmidt
- Creating Character Emotions: Writing compelling, fresh approaches that express your characters' true feelings by Anne Hood
- Writer's Guide to Character Traits, 2nd Edition by Dr. Linda Edelstein
- Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, 4th edition (DSM-IV-TR)
- The 48 Laws of Power by Robert Greene
