dragonyphoenix: Blackadder looking at scraps of paper, saying "It could use a beta" (blackadder)
The CDC director is talking about "impending doom" and comparing the US to where France was a few weeks back. Their cases are spiking now. That's it. I'm giving notice at work tomorrow.

Part of me doesn't want to go back at all. Co-workers don't wear masks. They don't social distance. Hell, they don't even give personal space but get right in your face. I'm not sure why I'm not just bolting.

I gave my notice. I told Tom who asked me to put it in an e-mail. He said something like "disappointed to see you go" but it was very perfunctory and said after a pause as if he'd just had the thought that he should say something like that. He'd done the same thing, down to the pause and the phrase, when I told him on Friday that I would be giving my notice soon.

Later he must have realized he hadn't given me a chance to tell him when I was leaving because he asked. I said "Friday". He put on a big happy face and held his hand to his ear. I guess he thought if I had a chance to reconsider I'd change my answer? I replied with Friday and then, at his blank look, "Friday Friday." He got angry at that and muttered something about "these people" before storming off. That got me thinking of people who'd left since Tom started.

The first is Bill. He gave a week's notice because his new job was going to pay so much better why make less for an extra week? At least that's what he told me. Makes sense. I figure the new job won't be as awful as this one as well.

The second is Jess. She left a few weeks back and did give two weeks notice. The company bought us pizza which I sort of think might be a slap at Bill. He's super into pizza. So much so that his nieces call him "Uncle Pizza". On the other hand, maybe the pizza was a message to us, something like "if you're loyal, look how well we treat you."

Shane gave a day's notice last week. He was a temp and probably won't even bother to put this on his resume which is just as well because Tom would give him a bad review if anyone called and asked. I heard Tom say so. I think Shane has more of a bad rep at the office than he deserves. Shane upset Barb and she's been bad-mouthing him right and left. I think she's a bit of a bully but for some reason the managers all adore her and listen to her.

Larry just up and quit. Tom was on the phone with him both Saturday and Sunday trying to get him to change his mind, but Larry has a new job. I sort of thought he might be interviewing. He'd take a day off here and there, and that's what I assumed he was doing with it.

And then I gave my notice today. I cited concerns about COVID for my short notice. And that's true. I've been concerned about the new variants for a while now and the CDC director's video was enough to tell me to get out now.

We recently consolidated the office from two floors to one. They handed out new lunch and break schedules today. Last Friday I told our manager that I have issues with Tina and Barb because they don't wear masks and will get right in my face when talking to me. Guess who I share breaks and lunch with.

Even if I were staying, it wouldn't really matter as I always go outside. I'm not taking my mask off in that building. But it feels like a slap in the face.
