I've been watching S7 - for the second time ever and the first time since 2009 - to get a better understanding of the Scythe arc and I just realized something.  The First has the Scythe, doesn't he? Damn. That is so lame.

And by lame I mean: There's no interesting arc I can work for my story. Although tht does mean I can make up pretty much any backstory for how they find it that I want.

Yeah, that bothered me. The Scythe just rocked up out of the blue - stands to reason someone should have known about it.

But nope, no storyline. I hope you come up with something WAY better!

*laughs* I hope mine Scythe backstory is better. I've got a general idea. As for the story overall, I'm thinking it might extend into the second season. I guess I'll see as I go with that. I'm still reviewing S1 episodes and working out the big theme for each and what scenes I'll want. Watched 1.7 (Angel) today. Less than week to NaNoWriMo though. I'll be way busy with my own novel then. I'm both looking forward to it and wondering what the heck I'm thinking. ;-)

1) One of the women Guardians, who created the Scythe, is turned by the last pure demon before it is killed. The Guardian turned demon escapes.
2) The last pure demon is killed.
3) The remaining Guardians hide the Scythe, putting it into the rock, to preserve it for the final battle.

So there is lore in the demon realm, passed down from the Guardian turned demon, about the Scythe, but most demons consider this to be pure myth. Eyghon believes in the Scythe and passes the knowledge along to Giles.

For Giles and Eyghon there are two issues. 1) no idea where the Scythe is so they have to find it and 2) Eyghon can only manifest in the physical form for a short while before destroying the body. He either has to leave (as he did when Ripper at all invoked him) or he will destroy the body (as he did in the episode where he showed up). While Slayer bodies are more resilient, Giles is still working on a way to keep Eyghon here without destroying the containing body because nobody knows how long a Slayer body would last holding Eyghon.

Is that better? Not that I have all the answers yet.

I always thought the Scythe was a bit over the top. I mean it was almost like the writers had run out of ideas ad thought. "Hey, lets throw this thing in and see what happens."

Apparently it first appeared in the comic, Fray, which is generations after the end of BtVS. In Buffy the Scythe shows up and is used pretty quickly. I expected more of a leadup. We first see it three episodes from the end and even then only at the very end of the episode.

This right here?

Awesomness.

That's one impressive backstory, with twists and turns, and it's pretty clever. I want it.

You can't imagine how excited I am about this. Ah, Evil Giles, how fun you must be...
