When She Was Bad

  • What's up with the gymnastics-ish moves? It can't be training. Some sort of warm-up? I'm thinking that people who fight and train to fight must be laughing their asses off at the BtVS training montages.

  • Angel coming in through Buffy's window reminds me of this Dawn and Angel moment.

  • What power does the Anointed One have over the local vamps? Does he know their dark and dirty secrets?

  • So Miss Calendar is assigned to Sunnydale to keep tabs on Angel but she takes the summer off to go to Burning Man.

  • Bitch Buffy. Wow! Imagine how awesome Buffy would have been as a vampire. She'd have left Darla in the dust.

Some Assembly Required

  • Zombies don't eat the flesh of the living.” Sometimes when I'm scritching the cat's head, I'll tell him zombie-hand is after his brain. And then I'll add that since zombie-hand doesn't have a mouth to eat with, it doesn't make much sense for it to go after his brain.

  • Does anyone else think that when Angel is following Cordy – that time when she hides in the dumpster – that he's getting an Angelus type of enjoyment out of it.

  • So Chris is having trouble with the girl's heads because they've been processed with formaldehyde. Would Daryl's head also have been processed the same way or did Chris actually steal the body before that could happen. I can totally see someone at a Sunnydale funeral home not wanting to deal with the paperwork relating to another stolen body and therefore not reporting it.

School Hard

  • Snyder: I say, 'Think of me as your judge, jury, and executioner.' I know it's a phrase, but it could be a Judge Dredd reference.

  • Snyder: Good. Because you mess up this time, and your parents will be coming to clean out your lockers. When I was laid off at Avtec Systems (They've been bought out and the name has been changed so I don't feel I have to hide the company name), they told me I could not clean out my office myself. The head of security did it and called me, days later, so I could pick up my belongings.

  • Yay! Spike!

  • But why does Spike say “Home, Sweet Home.” Has he been to Sunnydale before? When the Master said that Angelus should have been sitting at his right hand, I did think that there's a lot of the Fanged Four's history we haven't' seen. As far as I know, nothing in the canon has the Master and Angelus getting along at all.

  • Drusilla: (stares at Collin) This one has power. Okay, maybe the Anointed One doesn't know everyone's dirty secrets.

  • Buffy: D'you think you can help me cram some French tonight? I don't want Mr. DeJean telling my mother I'm an imbecile. Did anyone else hear this as Mr. Dijon? I was honestly wondering if Dijon was a french kind of mustard. *runs off to look it up* Ah, and it is a french mustard. The French teacher could have also been called Mr. Bordeaux or Mr. Meaux.

  • Buffy: Well, if I survive Parent-Teacher night tomorrow, I'll see what I can do about Saturday. During "The Puppet Show" Giles was all on-board with not messing with Snyder. In fact he was driving the train. What's changed his mind since then?

  • Angel talking about Spike: Once he starts something he doesn't stop until everything in his path is dead. You know, that's pretty much the same thing Giles says about the Order of Taraka in What's My Line. Never give up, never surrender just doesn't mean what it used to back in the good old days.

  • In the attack on the schook, the “We cut the power” guy looks a lot like the guy Buffy killed outside the Bronze.

Inca Mummy Girl

  • Yay! I'm not sure why I'm so excited by Inca Mummy Girl, but I am.

  • Cultural exchange student

  • When the mummy calls to Ampata, is anyone else reminded of the hyenas calling Willow's name?

  • Ampata learned English while on tour. Just like the mummy from Night at the Museum. And also like his brother, Kahmunrah. Actually if you get the Night at the Museum 2 DVD, there's a special feature that shows Hank Azaria doing different voices for the mummy. It's excellent.

  • Oz: That girl. Who is she? Oz! Yay!

  • Mummy dearest. Really? You went there?

  • And those two arms holding onto Xander after Buffy pulls the mummy off of him? Ugh. Ugh ugh ugh.

But why does Spike say “Home, Sweet Home.”

Because he's planning to make it his home, I thought.

Btw I love your conciseness!

Actually, that makes sense.

Conciseness? I split it up into four episode groups because I thought it'd be annoyingly long to read with more episodes.

The Who's That Girl moment where Oz falls for Willow never gets old.

I always assumed that it's "home, sweet home," because it's the Hellmouth and EVIL and therefore he feels at home.

On my last rewatch, I liked Inca Mummy Girl more than the first few go-rounds. I mean, I always loved Oz seeing Willow, of course. But now I really love the Ampata/Buffy parallels -- both young girls who want a normal life, but instead are chosen by powerful men to be sacrificed for the sake of others. And also, there are the Ampata/vampire parallels -- both feeding off/killing humans to survive -- except that there's some sympathy and understanding for Ampata, whereas, at this point in the series, there isn't any for vampires. I think there's a tiny hint here about morality not being as black-and-white as it appears, something which becomes a consistent theme as the show progresses.

I can't believe I hadn't thought about the Ampata / vampire parallels! They're right there. Where was my brain?

There is definitely sympathy for Ampata. She really did get a bum deal.

She really does...but not more than humans who become vampires, right? I mean, some of them are complicit in being turned, but that certainly doesn't seem too be the case for most of them. I think the sympathy for Ampata comes because her situation is so similar to Buffy's.

I hadn't thought of it that way, but ... yeah.

But part of the sympathy for Ampata is that she doesn't want to be evil. Vampires tend to be depicted as hurting people because they enjoy it. They'd kill even if they didn't have to. Ampata seems more of the life feeding on life theme. Once you're alive, you have to hurt something to survive.

Well, everything is relative :-) You are definitely concise compared to other rewatches that spend thousands of words on a single episode!

Oh. Yeah, I'm not really a talker.
