Summary: Written for a prompt over at Bite Sized Bits of Fic: John hopes that Jack will come back to him and it's that hope that keeps him going. I don't think that's quite where this went, largely because I didn't check the prompt before I wrote it.
Did You Even Think Of Me?
So he bummed around Earth, expecting the call call any day, never letting himself notice that Jack hadn't called. That would have been too close to acknowledging, well, something.
It's surprising how quickly the years can slip away.
He found himself back in Cardiff. The place, Jack's base, was gone. Most of Jack's crew were gone as well, two from his last encounter and, even though their deaths weren't his fault, he did feel guilty. Gwen Cooper was heading up the new Torchwood office, which was still a dangerous job but especially for someone with two kids, although that hadn't slowed her down as far as he could tell.
She told him the whole story. She was gentle but he got the gist of it. Pretty Eyes had gotten himself killed, saving the Earth, and Jack, unable to bear it without him, had left. Parts unknown.
Until then he hadn't really believed that Jack could love anybody more than...
He was on his thirteenth bottle, whiskey by then, in a bar that had emptied out shortly after he'd arrived, when she finally showed up. “Dear, dear, Gwen. Have a drink,” he said expansively.
She walked over slowly. He'd never noticed before how much she reminded him of a cop. “You can't stay here.”
He gave her a semi-sozzled look and replied, “Fine. I'll find another bar.”
“I mean on Earth.” He finished guzzling down the last third of the bottle and slammed it onto the bar. “Not if you're going to act like that,” she added.
As he strode out the bar, he called back behind himself. “No problem. Can't imagine why I stayed here so long in the first place. One Hell of a boring planet.”
