I'm still, I need no life
To serve on boys and men.
What's mine, was yours, is dead.
I take my leave of mortal flesh.
Captain John Hart frowned. “What is it again?”
“The Letters by King Crimson. It's an ancient earth song,” Captain Jack Harkness replied, rolling his eyes at his partner's denseness.
“It doesn't even make sense. The woman seems to be upset because her husband has a lover.”
“Ah, the strange sexual mores of ancient Earth,” Jack replied, sounding as if he were reminiscing.
“Which you know about because?”
“I was stationed there in the 1940's, Common Era,” Jack explained.
“Time Agent training, then,” John filled in. Jack nodded. “And this makes sense to you?”
“Whoa,” Jack said, laughing and raising his hands. “I didn't say that! It's completely bizarre but I have seen sexual jealousy in action and the Time Agency didn't exaggerate the explosiveness of the emotions.”
John accepted it. He'd traveled in both space and time long enough to be flexible about social norms. “Didn't quite catch that last bit at the end.”
Jack recited the last two lines and then explained. “Murder-suicide it was called. She killed her husband and then herself.”
John's jaw dropped. “Because he had a lover.”
“Sums it up,” Jack replied.
“And you think that should be our song?”
“Come on, John. It's full of lust, jealousy, rage, revenge. Besides, we're each too focused on coming out on top. Sooner or later one of us will kill the other.”
With a little smile, John started tiptoeing his fingers up Jack's torso. “You could be right about that.” Sliding his hands under Jack's coat he added, “Just don't expect me to take myself out after I've killed you.”
“I won't,” Jack whispered against John's lips. The coat fell to the floor.
