My only real experience with his work was through the (likely inadequate) film version of 'The Name of the Rose.' The film was...confusing to me when I first saw it (I was a kid, hardly a teenager actually). Since I have no idea how closely the film followed the novel, I'll try to spell it out a bit here. There was a seduction scene between Adso (played by a very young Christian Slater) and 'The Girl' (who, of course, had no name, played by Valentina Vargas) that got me to watch that strange film repeatedly until we had to return it to the video rental store. That's probably all I remember of that film. Oh! and the ink. Tongues covered in ink.
I remember enjoying the movie. I've read the book as well but it was so long ago that I don't recall how well the novel did, or didn't, follow the book.
