Note: The Christmas Shoes is, in my opinion, the most horrific holiday song ever. This year I got so annoyed by it that I had to write a response, which was supposed to point out the evilness of the song but instead came out much more sympathetic than I'd intended.

One time when they’d had a bit more money than usual, she’d tried to take him out for lunch, but the owner had chased them out shouting, “No shoes; no service.” So he really couldn’t be blamed, as she got sicker and sicker, for thinking that God would bar the gates to Heaven if she wasn’t gussied up all right and proper, but with the holiday crowds and all, the shopping trip took longer than he’d expected. His excited babblings about the bestest shoes ever turned into shrieks of “Mommy, Mommy” as the red shoes fell, forgotten, to the floor.

Good Lord that song is horrific! Do they actually play it very often?

Your response is very sympathetic :)

I think a less sympathetic response would be that the little boy is in fact an awesome con-artist. He's been deliberately pulling the heartstrings of his marks for weeks with his act, and it's leaving him very well off.

I've only heard it once so far this year, but it is played on the pop-music radio stations.

Yes, the con artist response would be much less sympathetic, but I was trying to address one of my major complaints with the song: he's off buying shoes while his mother is dying. That's why I tried to hint at the end that he came home to find her dead, which is my only question on the story. I'm not sure if that's clear or not.
