Could be the guy is one of those people who, as Colbert says, "just don't want to do it" and he's projecting his anger to avoid dealing with his own guilt.

Sort of freaked me out though, being such an incredibly angry response.

That's just utterly ridiculous. It sounds like someone is very defensive and I would hate to speculate on just why that is.
