What I'm watching

dragonyphoenixSince yesterday I posted what I'm reading, why not.
Currently:
Dr. Who: The Beginning – the first three storylines from the original Dr. Who, and by original I mean way back in 1963. I did get to see the first Dalek storyline. Apparently the Daleks have gotten over their need for an irradiated environment to survive. The Dr. seems to have lost his granddaughter somewhere along the line. He was also something of a jerk back then. He had no trouble suggesting they leave in the middle of a situation if his needs had been met, although his granddaughter and companions didn't let him. At the moment I'm watching a documentary on the origins of Dr. Who and just saw how the sound of the Tardis was created: one of the main components is a key run along a piano string. I very much liked the "Marco Polo" episode, but that may be because it was condensed down to 1/6th of it's original length!
Recently:
Defying Gravity – This is one of my top four favorite tv series. It's hard to describe though. Since I'm writing a web-serial story, I'm reviewing Defying Gravity for ideas on timing in serial stories.
Ikiru – Some months back I picked up Kurosawa's Throne of Blood – Macbeth set in feudal Japan – on a whim. I've never had a favorite director before but now it's Kurosawa and I'm working my way through all of his films that the library carries. I wouldn't say that this is his best work, but it's still an amazing film. It had me waxing existential on the meaning and purpose of life, which led to an excellent session with my therapist. ;-)
Inception – Leonardo diCaprio is an amazing actor, but the film was not much more than okay as far as I'm concerned.
The Hobbit – I wasn't a huge fan of the Lord of the Rings movies and I'm not a Tolkien fan to begin with, but The Hobbit is awesome. I'm wishing I'd gone to see it in the theater.
Soon:
Bergman's Persona – When Leslie and I were watching Men in Black III – an excellent film – we somehow got talking about Bergman. I decided to see if the library had any of his films.
I saw trailers for these: The Words is about an author who steals another author’s work and puts it out as his own. The Intouchables. Robot and Frank, which I’m watching next. Cloud Atlas.
Citizen Kane – I'm going through a list of movies recommended by a reviewer. This was probably one of them.
