Title: The Hero
Fandom: BtVS
Summary: In Prophecy Girl Buffy punches Giles so he won't interfere when she goes after the Master. What Giles is thinking as he's coming to.
Rating: G
Characters: Giles mainly but references to Jenny and Buffy
Disclaimer: They will be mine, oh yes they will, once I've taken over the world. Bwah-ha-ha!
Note: Written for a prompt at Giles Shorts – sword

When Buffy's punch had knocked him down, Rupert's thoughts flew back to his favorite boyhood game: drawing Excalibur from the stone. All the great warriors had tried and failed. When the monsters had attacked, he'd grabbed the nearest weapon to hand, drawing the sword smoothly from the stone. “Creatures of darkness beware, for I am Arthur of the Britons and your death is at hand.”

When he winced Jenny was there, asking if he was alright. “I'm not Arthur.” That seemed to upset her. He tried to explain. “I'm not the one who wields the sword. At best, I'm Merlin.”

Ah, the sad reality of being forced to stand by while others fight the good fight.

Lovely drabble.

Yeah, poor Giles. Thanks. I'm glad you enjoyed it.

I did not realise Buffy punched Giles to prevent him going with her.

I can see him having these thoughts and having played the sword in the stone game as a youngster. Merlin the adviser, the wise and he left Arthur. Hmmm.

I did not realise Buffy punched Giles to prevent him going with her. That's because it's a non-Spike episode. *huge grin*

It's lovely that everyone thinks this game works so well for a young Rupert. I hadn't even been thinking that Merlin had left Arthur. I'm afraid I'm not that up on the legends. Although Merlin being considered a child of the devil and Rupert becoming Ripper there for a while seems to have some resonances.

This feels so authentic to Giles as a kid.

Well done. I can see/hear Giles thinking that exact thing.

Oh, I love this. It's so perfect, makes so much sense (and I'm pretty sure I played this same game as s kid. Who says Arthur can't be a woman...?)

But Merlin's not such a bad thing to be, Giles. Powerful, intelligent, and always fighting - just not on the frontline, but from the shadows. (I think I've been watching too much Merlin lately)

Anywho this is awesome.

I actually have never watched Merlin. So I suppose in some ways it's funny I wrote this but I have a friend who is very interested in that Celtic mythology.

No, Merlin isn't a bad person to be, but it did require a pretty hefty shift of Giles' worldview. ;-)
