I don't read as much poetry as you probably think I do. I sort of cycle in and out of it.

I'm not sure how to reply. Not everyone is going to catch everything all of the time. I don't see missing an implication every once in a while is contradictory to reading poetry. Without specific examples don't really know what I've missed and can't answer.

It's not a problem. It just seemed odd that you expected me to be omniscient. I may be godlike in my awesomeness, she joked insecurely ... and I don't actually have anything to follow the but of that sentence.

My understanding for what people may or may not get comes from commentary by Joe Strazinsky on a B5 episode he wrote. The reveal at the end is that the guest character was Jack the Ripper. He said that half his viewers who commented thought it was obvious and the other half were completely floor and hadn't seen that coming at all. (I fell into the latter category in that case.)

Actually I miss a lot. In Cabin in the Woods when the motorcycle hits that force-field? I did not see that coming at all. Although afterwards I was all "how did I miss that?"

I have not read a lot of breaking the 4th wall kind of stories, and I've seen so little of AtS that I'm not familiar with the episode you mentioned.

I think if I was going to have a character speaking directly to the reader as if the reader were part of the story, I'd make it clear up front like I did in that "Special Delivery" story where Willy is speaking to the reader.
