dragonyphoenix: Blackadder looking at scraps of paper, saying "It could use a beta" (Katchoo)

Note: I am using Megan's name for the hacker: Fake Lenore.
Note: She is Not Dead is the title of an Adrian Belew song. I couldn't resist.

Early in December – the 8th perhaps; maybe it was the 4th – there was a post on pickamix's site saying she had died. I can't find the post to link to so I believe it's been taken down. From the 8th of January, there are three posts telling us that Megan had not died and explaining that her account had been hacked. (The posts are NOT DEAD!!!, Things I should've mentioned in the last post, and The 411 on the Fake Lenore for those who haven't read them.)

Of course I was as shocked as anyone when I first learned that Megan had died, but on December 10th I began to question the situation. I'd posted a chapter of Shanshu and Fake Lenore had commented on it. Specifically she noticed that Xander wasn't aware that Spike's chip had been removed. (Here's part of the comment: “I'm also assuming that he's too tired to remember that Spike got the chip removed somewhere in the middle of S7, hmmm but was he aware of the chip removal?”) At that point, my understanding of the person calling herself Lenore was that she wasn't a huge Buffy fan so for her to notice that error, which is the kind of error Megan would have noticed, did leave me questioning what we'd been told.

I did not mention my doubts to anyone. (That's not completely true. Eventually someone brought their doubts to me and we did discuss them, but I am not going to out that person. It's up to them to share their story, but only if they want to.) People were grieving and there was no proof. I wasn't about to add ambiguity and uncertainty to that grief.

I decided to chose to believe what Fake Lenore had been telling us. To explain why, I need to digress. Decades ago I was part of an online community where two people, Nurse Jones and Richard, were at odds. Richard posted a comment telling us that we didn't know that Nurse Jones was whom she said she was. Another user replied – and I have no idea what his name was – and basically said that Richard was correct. Nurse Jones could be the person she claimed to be or perhaps she was the creation of a group of English graduate students. Okay, and here's the relevant part. He added that he didn't care. She came off as a good person and an excellent friend and he was willing to treat her as the persona she projected, whether it was true or not. And so, having no reason to not believe Fake Lenore, I chose to believe what she'd told us.

And now Megan is back and and she's telling us she's been the victim of a hacker. My previous conclusion still stands. Having no reason to disbelieve Megan, I chose to believe she had no idea until just recently that any of this had gone down.

I know this situation is frustrating and upsetting. We've created a discussion area over at ficamix. Just keep in mind that Megan may or may not read there as she chooses.

Note: Barb's insightful post.
