I noticed that none of the caucasian folks in Firefly were wearing medieval armor either, or slathered in woad and such.

*laughs* But that mid-western thing they had going, that has to be archaic by then.

By then yes :), but not by the present. We still use cowboy imagery for just about everything and it's still pretty much a contemporary thing -- the other angle, of course, is that we wouldn't apply that imagery to the Northeast or the Pacific Northwest, and recognize that different parts of the US are actually different :).
