Right, I’ve spent far too much time lately being reasonable. Now I get to be bitchy.

I believe it’s sacrilegious to be offended by this version of the nativity. Jesus’ death is a necessary condition of salvation. Humanity can only be saved because Jesus became human and died. For Jesus to have a human death, he had to have a human birth. Those who prefer to think of Jesus coming out of Mary’s vagina floating on an illuminated cloud are denying Jesus’ human birth. They are thereby denying Jesus’ human death. If Jesus didn’t have a human death, then no one is saved. The people who are offended by this video are condemning is all to suffer in Hell for all eternity.

Thanks for posting this; your posts had made me quite curious about it. To be honest, I don't find it especially funny, but what I really like about it is that it make us think about the physical reality of "giving birth in a stable" -- something that is normally glossed over. I suppose that's what some people find offensive about this -- the focus on the earthier aspects of Jesus' birth, rather than the shiny 'holy' bits.

Personally I have a hard time believing there are people who think baby Jesus just magically teleported into his crib instead of being born in the normal, messy human way. After all, isn't the whole point that he was born as a human child?

That's the part I liked about it too. Years ago I read The Wise Wound which is about female blood and power and why we shouldn't have to hide the physicality of such things as menstruation and birth. I was so impressed by the book I dressed up as menstruation that Halloween. (The costume was less tacky than it sounds.) So that's what I was resonating with when I originally shared it.

isn't the whole point that he was born as a human child? That's what I was thinking when I wrote my rant-let.

I find it hilarious that anyone is offended. Birth is birth, folks. No, Jesus did not come floating out. There was all the usual pushing and groaning and ickiness.

(Also, Jesus didn't have blue eyes and blonde hair, but that's an argument for another time and place.)

Yeah, I really don't get where they're coming from. I think they're just easily offended.

Ooh, I heard the blue-eyed blond Jesus is really an image of the Borgia son. No idea if that's true or not.

This is definitely the physical reality of having a baby.

I have to say that the accurate depiction of that event doesn't bother me. I was surprisingly more bothered by the fact that it was performed by children.

Some of the comments, from wherever I found the vid, did have complaints that it was performed by children.
