dragonyphoenix: Blackadder looking at scraps of paper, saying "It could use a beta" (Still Life Reviving)

It’s December 19th and I’m thinking about darkness. And light. For my solstice ritual, I lit 14 candles on December 8th, 13 on the next day, and so forth. By solstice night, I’ll be down to one candle. Then I’ll start increasing them, night by night, until I have 14 lit again. It’s been difficult to sit silently as the darkness increases each night.

Before I sat with this evening’s 3 candles, I thought the darkness would seem deeper, more so than decreasing the light by one candle would account for. Instead the light seemed brighter than it had over the last three or four evenings. That may be because I had music playing, Renaissance Christmas tunes that I left on when I turned out the lights.

But I think it has more to do with the message of the winter solstice: light will return. Yes, the nights are getting longer, but light will return. Yes, we’re looking at a great darkness, but light will return. Hold onto that. Light will return. We will get through this darkness. Light will return.

This is a lovely message.

...Yes, we’re looking at a great darkness, but light will return. Hold onto that. Light will return. We will get through this darkness. Light will return.

A wonderful mantra for the troubles of life, I think
