Disclaimer: They aren't mine, not yet, but the will be once I've taken over the world. Bwah-ha-ha.
Warnings/Squicks: None
Summary: Ethan glared at Rupert, willing him to see how furious he was, but his lover was still caught up by the aftereffects of the spell. He could still see Ripper's hands slipping under Xander's shirt as the boy tried to squirm away. He could still hear Ripper's voice telling him to sod off, that he'd found a new lover. Don't need me any more, do you? Ethan knew he wasn't being fair, that Ripper hadn't been able to control himself against the spell, any more than the rest of Sunnydale had. He'd only escaped himself because he constantly kept shields up, to prevent stray magics from affecting him, which had been lucky. He'd been the only one sane enough to convince Amy to break the spell.
Notes: Xander/Ethan. Ethan thinks Giles is grooming Xander to replace him so he determines to beat Giles to it and take Xander as his own. Bonus points if you get voyeur!Giles in the picture.

“Did you have a delightful time, dear heart? Chasing after that delicious boy?” Ethan asked as Rupert stood in the doorway of their home, his face a pale mask.

“Not now Ethan,” Rupert, still almost Ripper, shouted.

Ethan glared at Rupert, willing him to see how furious he was, but his lover was still caught up by the aftereffects of the spell.

He couldn't be the one to reach out to Rupert, not after what Ripper had done that day but it seemed that Rupert was frozen in the doorway. Carefully choreographing his moves, Ethan poured out two glasses, holding one out towards Rupert without moving from the liquor cabinet. You can come to me, he thought and Rupert did but only to grab the drink out of his hand, slam it down, and pour himself another.

Instead of joining him, Rupert started pacing the room, glass in hand but not drinking again. Ethan took careful sips, watching. Rupert rubbed at his arm as if he were wiping off dirt. “I cannot believe that idiot boy.”

“Xander?”

“Of course Xander,” Rupert said, pacing on the other side of the couch. How far away from me do you need to be, Ethan wondered. “A love spell?” Rupert continued. “What kind of imbecile performs a love spell?” Giving Ethan a dismissive look, he added, “And you think he's smarter than he looks.”

“We conjured up Eyghon, just for kicks mind you, when we were older, and presumably wiser, than he is now. What he did wasn't all that clever but you have to take his circumstances into account. When Cordelia dumped him...”

Rupert smashed his drink to the floor where it left whiskey and shattered glass in its wake. “He could have gotten himself killed. I could have killed him. I almost...” Rupert shrank in on himself, covering his face with a hand.

Oh, my love, Ethan thought as he laid a hand on Rupert's shoulder. He was shocked when Rupert jerked away from him. “Not now, Ethan. I need to be alone. I need... I'm going to take a shower.”

Ethan kept his jaw firmly in place although it hardly mattered, he could have let it drop to the floor for all Rupert would have noticed as he dashed to the bathroom without looking back. Once he heard the water start, Ethan poured himself another drink and fled the apartment. He didn't go far, not in Sunnydale, not after dark. Sitting on a bench just a few feet from the door, he forced his hands to relax before he broke his glass and asked himself why Rupert had overreacted to the love spell.

Either that or wonder why Rupert was showering without him.

Rupert seemed blind to the boy's potential. Granted he wasn't a Slayer or a witch but Ethan had collected a fascinating list of accomplishments, starting with resuscitating Buffy after she'd been killed by the Master. Rupert could be quite clear headed when it came to assessing Buffy's potential, or even Willow's. The only one he couldn't be objective about was Xander.

No. That wasn't true. Ethan carefully put his glass down. Rupert couldn't be objective about him, either. Rupert had never been able to be objective about any of his lovers. He expects too much from me and not enough from Xander. His tastes have always been more eclectic than mine, Ethan thought, but would he have? No, not yet. The boy was too young. Even when he'd been Ripper, Rupert had had certain standards.

“Lovers?” Ethan whispered. Hardly anyone would have been able to see below his calm demeanor but Ripper, had he been there, would have taken one look at Ethan's white knuckles and known he was furious. “Been deceiving me, Ripper? Did you really think I wouldn't notice that you were planning to replace me with some pretty boy?”

Ethan leaped up, ready to race off into the night, but then twistfell back onto the bench. Not the best time for a stroll but he needed to think and, to do that properly, he needed to move. Now where, he started to wonder and then he knew. There was a rave, a couple of blocks past the Bronze, something the kiddies didn't know about. He could dance the night away while he worked out his response to Rupert's treachery.

Ethan laughed as he skipped down the stairs, knowing Rupert would think he was merely being considerate. “Am I living up to your expectations, Ripper?”
