On Friday I did not give notice at work but I let my manager know I'm doing pre-work for a coding bootcamp and will be giving notice - 1 week - once I've passed my assessment. Now I've seen other employees be let go when they were near leaving: one when the managers learned she was job hunting and another who was told three days into her final week that she didn't have to return. They don't do that to everyone though; some people leaving do work that final time.

I'm wondering, though, if they'll just let me go tomorrow. Probably not because they are severely understaffed. On the other hand, they do seem to expect a weird amount of loyalty for what is, in effect, a crappy mailroom job.

It's often the least paid and least demanding jobs that want to instill some sort of company loyalty in you, and I think it has a lot to do with trying to exploit you and thinking that if you are loyal to them, you'll allow yourself to be exploited more.

Mostly, I blame capitalism and its belief that everything exists only to be exploited for profit, so the faster the manager stops thinking of the worker as human, the easier everything goes. And since you treat them as less than human, you expect them to behave the same way, and that means surveillance to make sure the human resources don't stray from their assigned productivity.
