1941 Dr Seuss cartoon illustrating the U.S. stance denying Jews safe haven from the Nazis. Notice the slogan on the shirt. Sound familiar? - posted by Al Petteway
Reminds me of Marge Piercy's Gone to Soldiers. Of a French Jewish family, only two daughters survive: one because they got her out to America and the other despite joining the Resistance.
I think this might be the opposite.. :) But on a related topic, have you seen X Company? *curious* I've seen a few eps and am going to try the rest, it might be interesting to you - it's well done, too.
So I'm going to read about this book, considering it a rec. There's a lot of good reviews... there's one review upset about the extreme use (to their opinion) of animal abuse and killing. I should think it was put there on purpose, to highlight human cruelty in a mundane fashion, but then, I haven't read yet. I'm tempted to.
One brief uncomfortable question: how much of this story is About Heterosexuality? I mean, how much of it is "boy meets girl, girl thinks about boy" covered with the politics and history? Because I've been burned before by books about Topics which ended up being books about straight couples getting together and little else. Let me know? Thanks :)
I haven't read it for a long time. I don't recall the animal abuse one of the reviewers is complaining about.
I think the book really is about the history although there are couples that get together. Most of them are straight, but there is a relationship between two women. I think one of the men might be bisexual but, as I said, it's been a long time since I've read it so I'm not certain.
Piercy is a social activist. I liked the novel and I think I'd get bored if it were just about straight people hooking up.
